In Memory Of
Jean Lofland
1928 - 2018

Jean lived a wonderful life! Born Jean Winifred Irwin in Scranton, Pennsylvania on January 1, 1928, Jean lived in Pennsylvania and in New Jersey until 1939. She then moved to Columbus, Ohio where she stayed for the rest of her life.

She met the love of her life in the late 1930's, Dale Lofland, and they were married for 69 years. They had five children and lived a happy and active life together in Clintonville for 55 of those years.

Jean is survived by her husband Dale Lofland; 4 children: Douglas Lofland, (wife Ann-Marie), Kathryn Shore, David Lofland, and Julia Lytle; 3 grandchildren: Leia Lytle, Zachary Shore, and Abigail Shore; and her two brothers Kenneth Irwin (wife Miriam) and William Irwin (wife Beverly).

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, and her infant son, Jeffrey Lofland.

Jean had a fulfilling career in government and volunteered for many organizations. She was a stay-at-home mother until her youngest daughter Julia was about 3. She then worked as a secretary in the Ohio Department of Appalachia, as a stenographer for the Ohio House of Representatives, as a secretary to the judges of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas, and finally was promoted to court bailiff (a job held by few women in that era).

Jean loved to travel and traveled all over Europe, two trips to Hawaii, and several cruises. Jean served on the board of The Ohio Bailiffs Association, Mount Carmel Auxiliary, and Grant Hospital Women’s service board. She was a long-time member of the sorority Beta Sigma Phi, organizing many charitable events. She helped form the Stargazer Charity and served on the board. She also belonged to several knitting clubs and enjoyed traveling, knitting, sewing, and being with her family.

Visitation will be Friday, March 16, 2018 from 4pm to 6pm at Newcomer Funeral Home NE Chapel 3047 E. Dublin Granville Rd. Columbus.

Memorial service will follow at 6pm at the funeral home.
