In Memory Of
Mary Jane Weals
1932 - 2018

Mary Jane Weals, age 85, passed away January 7th at First Community Village in Columbus, OH from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. Born December 28, 1932 in Amsterdam, Ohio, to Hugh and Minerva McLaughlin.

Mary Jane married her high school sweetheart and moved to Columbus in 1954. She was a devoted wife and mother, who actively supported her children as a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, Room Mother and Sunday School Teacher, while also acting as Office Manager for her husband’s horticultural sales business.

After her children were grown, she attended The Ohio State University, obtained her Teaching Certificate, and taught Vocational Horticulture for South-Western City Schools at the Westland and Grove City Vocational Centers. She gave up teaching to work alongside her husband as a Sales Representative for Ball Seed Co., working with schools and institutions that had horticultural programs. For over 20 years, she managed the Spouse and Family Program for the Ohio Florist’s Association’s annual convention, and after her husband’s death worked at the OFA office in Columbus.

She was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Upper Arlington, where she served as a Licensed Lay Eucharistic Minister, President of the Flower Guild and The Women of St. Mark’s, member of the Memorial Reception Committee, and co-Manager of the St. Mark’s Memorial Garden for 16 years.

Mary Jane moved to First Community Village in 2014, where she was active and well loved by residents and staff. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Weals.

Survived by children Victoria Weals, Richard Weals, and Christopher (Amy Hancock) Weals; grandchildren Timothy (Whitney) Weals, Meghann (Eric) Johnson, Gregory Weals, Duncan Weals, Olivia Weals and Lucas Weals; and great-granddaughter Nora Jane Weals.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 27th, 12:00 Noon, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Upper Arlington, with a reception at the church following the service (approximately 1:00 PM).

Mary Jane and Carl spent their lives in the floral/horticultural industry, so we won’t say “in lieu of flowers,” but if preferred, donations may be made in her name to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (www.parkinson.org).
