In Memory Of
Ruby D. Hill
1935 - 2020
Ruby Deloris Hill, age 85, of New Castle, Pennsylvania, passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2020. Ruby (better known by her family as “Lois”) was born on September 15, 1935 to the late Arthur and Viola (Garside) Hill. Ruby grew up in New Castle, Pennsylvania where she attended St. John United Holy Church of America Inc. with her family. She accepted Christ at a young age, and served in her local church in the Northwestern District, “UHC”. Although her membership changed when she became Pastor in the United Methodist Church, Ruby never forgot her roots and frequently attended UHC convocations, youth conventions, as well as churches throughout the United Holy Church of America Inc.
Ruby attended Slippery Rock College where she received her teaching degree and taught elementary school for a few years before returning to school in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she obtained her degree in nursing. Ruby worked as a nurse in New Castle, Pennsylvania for many years until she answered the call to the ministry. Ruby moved to Delaware, Ohio to attend MTSO, Methodist Theological Seminary, where she received her master’s degree in Theology. She was ordained a full elder in the West Ohio conference in 1987.
The Right Reverend Ruby D. Hill served as Pastor of several congregations, field staff for the office of finance, and field service GBGM at the United Methodist Church until she retired in 2012. She was a member of Asbury North United Methodist Church for many years where she served on committees, taught and attended bible study, and cherished her special friends and colleagues Ethel, Norma, Lynn, and Dianne of Delaware Ohio, just to name a few.
Ruby loved serving people: from teaching children, to nursing people, and Pastoring for the United Methodist Church. Although she lived alone, Ruby always lived in big houses welcoming anyone in need into her home: nieces, nephews, United Methodist colleagues, and young women transitioning into their professional careers. Although she had no children of her own, she was affectionately known as “Aunt Louis,” to everyone young and old. When it came to Thanksgiving, sweet potato pies were her specialty that no one could match. To this day, no one really knows the whole recipe.
Ruby is survived by her sister Shirley Jean (Robert) Rollins; Godson/Nephew Jeffery (Rochelle) Rollins, Shelvia (Michael) Hunter, Muriel (Ronald) Fairrow, James Rollins and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews.
Ruby was preceded in death by her father and mother Arthur and Viola (Garside) Hill, sisters; Mary Hill, Magnolia (Gunn) Murry, Gladys Artist; and brothers Arthur Hill and Edward Hill.
Private family viewing will be held Saturday November 28, 2020. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in New Castle Pennsylvania.
All cards and condolences should be sent to Shirley Rollins (Sister): Three Creeks Senior Living 5435 Morse Road, Apt. #135 Gahanna Ohio 43230
