In Memory Of
Larry "Zeke" Znamenacek
1935 - 2020

Larry Znamenacek (Zeke), 85, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2020, at his family’s home in Grove City, Ohio. Larry was born in Crete, Nebraska, on November 5, 1935, to George and Evelyn Znamenacek, and was a middle child of 8 brothers and sisters.

At the age of 17, Larry left home to join the U.S. Air Force and spent 21 years on active duty flying around the world. While stationed in England, he met and married the love of his life, Elsie Heesom. They had six children--Karen (John) Znamenacek-Baker, Diane Znamenacek, Julie Znamenacek, Jani Znamenacek, Michael (Stacey) Znamenacek, and Theresa (William) Hanson.

When Larry retired from the Air Force in 1975, he started a car dealership in central Ohio, where he and Elsie raised their children.

Larry played a central role in his large family, which included nine grandchildren--Laura (Andrew) Baker-Rowe, Sarah (Patrick) Gallagher, Bryan (Nicole) Basenback, Nicholas Basenback, Michael (Carly) Znamenacek, Kali (Taron) Znamenacek-Slone, Christopher Znamenacek, Liam Hanson and Adelyn Hanson--and 11 great grandchildren--Michael Basenback, Aiden Rowe, Jesse Basenback, Liam Hanson, Riley Basenback, Emerson Gallagher, Scarlett Znamenacek, Genevieve Gallagher, Kinzlee Slone, Kamdyn Slone, Maxwell Basenback, and Alexander Znamenacek.

There were few things he relished more than playing euchre with his children and grandchildren. Larry also enjoyed sports, from the time he played softball with the U.S. Air Force to his lifelong dedication as a loyal University of Nebraska Husker football and basketball fan.

He also loved browsing for hidden treasures at flea markets and gardening.

Larry never met a stranger he didn’t know.

His compassion for others and willingness to help those around him--both family and friends--was unmatched. He deeply touched the lives of everyone who had the fortune to know him.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife Elsie, his children Diane and Michael, and all but one of his siblings. His loving spirit, laughter, and sharp wit will be greatly missed.

A “Celebration of Life” service will be held on July 31, 2021. If you are interested in attending, please email julieznamenacek@aol.com for more information. In lieu of flowers for the family, please make a tribute to “Larry & Elsie Znamenacek Family” on the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, Central Ohio Chapter website: https://tinyurl.com/y4m2qv4b
