William Melvin "Bill" Young
1930 - 2022

William “Bill” Young, age 91 of Columbus, Ohio went home to the Lord Saturday May 14, 2022 peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 3, 1930 in Ashley, Ohio and grew up there. He was a 1948 graduate of Ashley High School. He served in the Army for four years during the Korean War. He obtained the rank of sergeant. He married the love of his life, Shirley in 1955. Bill and Shirley celebrated 60 years of marriage together.
He graduated from Ohio State University in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in education. Bill taught drivers education at West High School in Columbus public schools from 1956 to 1986. He also was athletic director during the 1970’s. Bill enjoyed serving the Columbus community in the Westgate Kiwanis Club for many years. He served as president and past president. He also enjoyed being an usher and then head usher at Ohio State football games for many years. He was a proud life-long Buckeye. He enjoyed spending time during the summers at Whitmore Lake, Michigan with his closest family friends, Byron (Barney) and Alice Ridenour, Nanette and Jeff Groomes, and their daughters Angela and Elizabeth.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Clara Young, his wife Shirley, his former son in law, Michael Bachus, son in law, Henry Smith, and his best friends Byron (Barney) and Alice Ridenour (Whitmore Lake, Michigan). He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Smith, grand-daughter Valerie Bachus, family friend, Dallas Pruitt, many extended family members, friends, and his beloved companion cats. The family would like to thank Bella Care Hospice, and all the staff at Norwich Springs for their loving care of Bill.
Visitation will be Sunday May 22nd from 12:00-2:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral home 3393 Broadway Grove City, Ohio 43123. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm. A private burial for immediate family will be held on a separate date. In Lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Hilltop Kiwanis Club in Bill’s memory. Hilltop Kiwanis Club 1100 S.
