Allen Artz Wiant, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025, at the remarkable age of 100 years, in a life defined by love, service, and an enduring commitment to family.
Born on September 23, 1924, in Peking, China, Allen's roots were as diverse as his impressive career. He grew to become an accomplished Electrical Engineer, dedicating many years to General Electric in Erie, PA, and extending his expertise through programs like USAID, where he supported Afghan students pursuing education in electricity and physics. His career also included notable positions with the Department of Defense and North American Rockwell, leaving a lasting impact on vocational education through his work with The Ohio State University.
Allen's journey of knowledge began early; he received formative education at Yenching Schools in China, furthering his studies at Ohio Wesleyan and earning a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from The Ohio State University. He also attended Seminary School in Toronto, Canada, where he nurtured his passion for the Lord.
His commitment extended beyond his professional life into military service, where he served in the United States Navy during World War II. Allen completed Officer Training School and specialized in communications, later serving his country actively from 1945 to 1946 based in Sasebo, Japan.
Yet, what Allen cherished most was his family. He was a proud father to five children: Janice (Jim) Tate, Joan Leatherman, Ellen (John) Jones, David (Donna) Wiant, and Jonathan (Karen) Wiant. Each of his children embraced their faith in Jesus, a legacy of love and values he instilled in them. The warmth of family continued with Allen being blessed with 17 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren, and sister, Cecilia, each holding a special place in his heart.
To the family who survives him, Allen was more than just a father; he was an oak, a pillar of strength, and a guiding light. His daughter Ellen remarked, "He was impactful on many, many lives," a sentiment echoed by others who knew him well. A gentle soul, his son David lovingly described him as a "sweet and gentle soul," one who truly cared for those around him. He had a knack for leaning in when others might have turned away, showcasing a character rich in empathy and kindness. His granddaughter, Ruby fondly said, "The man I love the most in the world... not my husband—and my husband is okay with that."
In his leisure hours, Allen found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved birds, trees, and nature; outings to the outdoors and beach became cherished memories. He often lent a helping hand to his neighbors, trimming trees and shrubs in his retirement, embodying the spirit of giving that his family knew so well.
Allen was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Rita, as well as his parents Bliss and Mildred (Artz), brothers Leighton and Benjamin, grandson, Jacob, granddaughter Kimmy, and brother-in-law Michael. Each of these individuals will be remembered in the legacy of love that Allen created throughout his century-long journey.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00am, May 9, 2025, at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Ohio, a fitting tribute to a life richly lived and a heart deeply loved.
As we honor Allen Artz Wiant, we reflect on the profound impact he had on all who knew him. A man of integrity and compassion, his legacy will continue to shine brightly through the lives of his family and everyone he touched.
