Listen to Obituary

Bernard Raymond Baker Jr., 62, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on March 30, 2026, at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Bernie was born on June 19, 1963. At eleven years old, he survived a train accident that took both of his legs and nearly took his arm. He spent the next 51 years proving that wasn't enough to slow him down.

He drove sports cars with hand controls. He built racecars. He rode four wheelers. He built every computer he ever owned from the ground up, better and faster than anyone else could. He could look at a pile of components and turn it into a machine. He passed that knowledge down to all three of his children and his grandchildren. What he knew about electronics was generational, and every one of them carries it.

He married the love of his life, Deanna, on November 12, 1988. She was his and he was hers for over 37 years. She called him her everything, her safe place, her home. He said the same about her. After 37 years, he still called her his "girl." He was a father to three, a PawPaw to four, and the bravest person in every room he was ever in. He laughed loud, loved hard, and was funny without trying to be. He would say the thing everyone was thinking but nobody had the nerve to say out loud.

He loved rock music and metal. He loved it loud. He loved fishing, his PC, annoying his wife, and making his grandkids laugh. His grandchildren called him their best friend.

He was not a man who made excuses. He was not a man who wanted your sympathy. He was complicated, protective, stubborn, and intelligent in ways most people couldn't keep up with. He was the kind of man who made you forget about what he didn't have, because he was too busy being the loudest, most alive person in the room.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Raymond Baker Sr.; his mother, Betty Lou (Patton) Mann; his stepfather, Estel Mann; niece Charissa Marie Taylor; and his brother-in-law, Harold McGath.

He is survived by his wife, Deanna; his children, Ryan Baker, Brandon (Casey) Baker, and Andrea (Brad) Baker; his grandchildren, Zane Bernard Holcomb, Alice Jackson, Karlie Chamberlain, and Rylie Chamberlain; and his siblings, Madeline (Bruce) DeRoche, Cheryl (Bob) Chenault, Melody McGath, Wesley (Teresa) Baker, and Tonya Mann.
