Bernard E. Thompson

August 7, 1941 — November 2, 2025

Listen to Obituary

Bernard Eugene Thompson, age 84, of Grove City, Ohio, went to be with the Lord peacefully on November 2, 2025.

Born on August 7, 1941, in Morrisvale, Boone County, West Virginia, Bernard was the son of Mildred Maxine (Spurlock) Thompson and Bernard Willard Thompson, who preceded him in death. He shared a lifelong bond with his brother Glen Dale (Patricia) Thompson, who survives him and was faithfully by his side throughout his life. Although his brother Paul passed away at a young age, Bernard carried his memory throughout his life.

After graduating from Scott High School in Madison in 1959, Bernard proudly served in the United States Army. His time in service deepened his sense of discipline, responsibility, and loyalty, qualities that became part of everything he did. Following his service, he attended Marshall University, where he earned his degree and began a lifelong career as a Certified Public Accountant, with many years at Schuler Leukart. He was known for his honesty, patience, and attention to detail, and he earned the respect of his colleagues and clients not just for his professionalism but for his warmth and kindness.

In 1998, Bernard married the love of his life, Gay Thompson. Together they built a life centered around care, family, and steady support for one another. They celebrated small moments, stood side by side through life’s challenges, and created a home filled with love.

Family was always at the heart of Bernard’s world. He was the devoted father of Jennifer (Scot) Klump, Brian (Amy) Thompson, and Julie (Brian) Blevins, and the loving stepfather of Christy (Matt) Tackett and Cassy (Jason) Wagner. He adored his grandchildren Rebecca, Sarah, Riley, Keegan, Hunter, Colton, Alexis, Gavin, Ryan, Allyson, and Addison, and great-grandchildren, who filled his days with laughter and pride. Bernard also cherished his extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. He made a special effort to celebrate them just as he did for his own children and grandchildren.

Bernard would do anything for his loved ones. You could find him on the sidelines cheering, at a school event smiling with pride, helping with homework, coaching, or playing a lively game of Old Maid. He celebrated every achievement, no matter how small, and made sure his family knew how much he loved them. He was their biggest fan, always encouraging and always proud. He found happiness in simple things as long as he was with family: outings, pizza nights, dinners at Smoky Bones, good stories, and evenings at home.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Newcomer Funeral Home, Grove City, with visitation from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and a service at 4:00 p.m. for close friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Honor Flight Columbus.

Bernard left this world better than he found it. His kindness, steadiness, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
