Carol Ann Hostrup, 82, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at Paramount Senior Living in Westerville, Ohio.
Carol was born on March 11, 1943, in Marion, Ohio, to Rev. L. Thomas and Grace (Turner) Collum. As the years passed, she was blessed with 5 sisters and they became known as The Collum Girls.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Richard Hostrup, and her sister, Rosemary Atherton.
She is survived by her sisters, Nancy Lapczynski, Naomi (Jack) Chevalier, Barbara (Steve) Wood, and Joyce (Kenny) O’Hara, and many precious nieces and nephews of two generations.
Carol led a full and adventurous life. She began her professional career at the Holophane Company in Newark and quickly rose to the position of executive secretary for attorneys in Newark, Zanesville, and Columbus.
In 1978, she began a 30+ year career with Ernst & Young, retiring in 2009. She was a member of Executive Women International and served as their president for a time. After retirement, Carol worked with her husband in his catering/event planning business doing accounting and decorating projects and traveling to events from Malibu, California to Destin, Florida across the country.
Traveling was one of Carol’s passions. Throughout the years, she was able to visit all the lower 48 states, Hawaii, Bermuda, Europe, Japan, Taiwan, The Philippines, Hong Kong, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, Egypt, Paris, Monaco, Nice, Monte Carlo, South America, Mexico, Canada, Australia, Fiji, the Caymans, and Africa (perhaps her most adventurous). She did much research for each trip and kept copious notes in journals which she shared with her family when she returned.
Carol appreciated fine things, including stage shows, musicals, the symphony, beautiful clothes, jewelry, home decor, and delicate crystal figurines. She created beauty in all parts of her life.
She was a lover of cats: Persians, Siamese, and Himalayan, (as well as a couple of rescues), and gave them regal names like Napoleon and Alexander. They were treated royally as well, like her children.
Like her father (who was a minister in the Church of the Nazarene), Carol had a gift for language, with a quick and often sarcastic wit. She was a writer at times, creating articles for a newsletter and even a poem or two from time to time. Her words remain, in journals and notes written on greeting cards, and letters, but mostly in the hearts of her family.
Carol was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
The family would like to express their thanks to Care 360 Hospice for their kindness and patience in caring for Carol and treating her with dignity and respect, also to the Paramount nursing staff.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to local cat welfare organizations.
