Catherine Mae Asbury-Appell, 77, of Venice, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2025, after a long and full life. Born on March 3, 1948, in Charleston, West Virginia, Catherine was the twelfth of fourteen children of Elton and Mary Asbury. From her earliest years, she learned the values of hard work, humility, and determination—traits that carried her through life’s joys and challenges.
Catherine grew up in a loving but humble home, where time spent together mattered more than material things. She carried that lesson forward throughout her life, building her own family with the same spirit of love and devotion. When her sister passed, Catherine, without hesitation, opened her heart and her home, becoming a mother not only to her daughter Lisa but also to her niece and nephew. She remained true to the promise she made to her sister, raising all three with love and strength.
Over the years, Catherine became a successful business owner, running multiple businesses in Columbus, Ohio, and Charleston, West Virginia. She was known for her independence, resilience, and fierce commitment to providing for her family.
Catherine was preceded in death by her beloved husband and soulmate, Thomas Appell; her parents, Elton and Mary; and several of her siblings. She is survived by her siblings Jacqueline Kerschner, Lynn Asbury-Melvin, Patricia Eggleston, and William Asbury, along with many nieces, nephews, and their families.
She also leaves behind her cherished immediate family: Lisa (Christina) Asbury, Annette (Chris) Adams, Jerry (Crystal) Otis, Taylor (Jair) Sholar-Johnson, Alex (Nathan) Harms, Sydney Little, Cody (Ashley) Adams, Caitlyn Adams (Jachai Thomas), Leena Otis, Brooklyn Adams, Thomas Adams, Hunter Harms, and Oliver Wilburn. She was also deeply loved by her special nieces MaryAlice Asbury, Becky Asbury-Meeker, and Lorie Whitmire, and their children.
In her later years, Catherine faced the challenges of dementia with grace, supported lovingly by her family. Her caregiver, daughter Lisa, shared countless moments of porch-sitting, quiet reflection, and treasured memories—simple times that reflected Catherine’s lifelong belief that time spent together is the greatest gift.
Catherine’s strength, independence, and love will continue to inspire her family and all who knew her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Tidewell Hospice in Venice, FL, for their compassionate care and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Catherine’s memory to your local Hospice House.
