Charles R. Shaner, known as "Chuck" to family and friends, was born on July 23rd, 1929, in Columbus, Ohio and grew up in the city's Franklinton neighborhood; which he and other's affectionately called "The Bottoms". He graduated from Central High School and went on to attend The Ohio State University, earning both his undergraduate and master's degrees in science.
He dedicated his professional life to education, beginning his teaching career at Cedarville High School and later spending 30 years at Columbus Public Schools, where he specialized in Biology and taught science at South, Walnut Ridge, and Beechcroft High Schools. In addition to his work in the classroom, he was a devoted high school and college track and field coach, mentoring and inspiring many student-athletes throughout his career.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles J. and Louise (Golden) Shaner; his brother, Bob Jones; and his three wives, Joann, Ruth, and Darlene.
He is survived by his five children, Larry (Linda) Wright, Patti (Jim) LaPorte, Cyndy (Mike) Sieving, Chuck (Jane) Shaner, and Kathy (Dan) Arnold; as well as his niece and nephew, Shirley and Jeff Jones. He was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Chuck enjoyed golfing, painting, gardening, and spending time with his family. In his later years, he took an active role in the Central High Alumni Association, helping to compile and create the Central High School, "Book of Champions", which celebrates the many championship teams from one of Columbus' original high schools. He also played a major role in preserving Central High School, including the historic facade of the building that now houses COSI.
He passed peacefully on Friday, August 28th, 2026. Chuck will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his commitment to education, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, September 8th, 2026, at Newcomer Funeral Home, SW Chapel, 3393 Broadway, Grove City, Ohio (614-539-6166). A funeral service will follow the next morning, on Wednesday, September 9th, 2026, at 11:30 am in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Abigail Adams presiding.
Burial and graveside services will follow at 1:00 pm at Sunset Cemetery (6959 W Broad St Galloway, OH 43119).
