Charles E. Willey, affectionately known as "Charlie", age 68, passed away Friday, September 13, 2013, at Mt. Carmel St. Ann's Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Charlie was born at White Cross Hospital in Columbus on October 30, 1944, son of the late Rosemary and Elmer Willey. He attended Columbus Public Schools in the Linden area and graduated from Linden McKinley High School in 1962. Charlie worked for Buckeye Union Insurance Company for 16 years and was best remembered for his unwavering 22 years of service in the Parts/Body Shop at Chesrown Oldsmobile at Karl and Morse Roads in Columbus. He also worked at Jack Maxton Chevrolet, Worthington; Immke Honda, Dublin; and Kroger and Walgreens, New Albany. Charlie was a dedicated employee throughout his life until his health problems made it impossible for him to continue employment.
Charlie was an avid corvette, race car driver and classic street rod fan. He was an active member of the Central Ohio Corvette Club; part of the Willey-Steckhan-Sullivan Racing Team; and he drove the #36 Race Car sponsored by Chesrown Oldsmobile.
He was loved, respected, cherished and will never be forgotten by all who knew him. Those of us that knew and loved him will always remember his uncanny wit and dry sense of humor.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Doris D. (Kitsmiller), Byron R. McElwee and Charles E. Kitsmiller; paternal grandparents, Emile Chelsey Willey and Caroline Emilia Willey.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his son, Austen John "A.J." Willey of Columbus; step daughter, Alicia (Charles Leighton) Zimmey of Cincinnati; sisters, Darlene (Robert) Johnson of Linden, Michigan and Marcia (Cecil Smith) Williams of Columbus; special friends and former in-laws, Lauree and Bill Horn; and a host of cousins, nieces, great nieces, great-great nieces, nephews, great nephews, great-great nephews; former wives and friends, Kay Johnson and Carol Patton; special feline companion, Kitty; and many, many special friends who loved him dearly.
Visitation will be Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 1:00-3:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home NE Chapel, 3047 E. Dublin-Granville Rd. Columbus, with the Celebration of Life beginning at 3:00 PM.
Reserved parking will be in the front of the funeral home for Corvettes and classic cars.
