Curtis Charles Oberrath, age 80, of New Albany, Ohio, passed away on June 29, 2026. He was born on December 22, 1945 to Charles W. and Dorothy E. (Juergens) Oberrath in Cleveland, Ohio.
Curt was proceeded in death by his parents and by some cousins in the Cleveland and California area.
Curt is survived by his beloved wife, Nina L. Lyons, and his ex-wife, Deborah A. (Stauffer) Rapp. He is survived by daughter Jamie (Matthew) Claus and their children Caleb, Gavin, and Bailey and daughter Janelle (Chris) Merritt and their children Hayden and Hanna. He is also survived by step-son Greg (Jennifer) Perie and their children Anita, Nick, Emily, and Alex; step-daughter Stefanie (Bodie) Truitt; sister Karen (Joanne Markiewicz) Oberrath; cousins and their families; and, many friends.
Curt received his Associate of Arts degree from the Mansfield Business College. His work career spanned years in insurance, retail management, and airline transportation security.
Curt will always be remembered as an avid sports fan for Lexington Ohio and New Albany Ohio high school sports programs, especially the basketball programs as evidence by the notebooks he kept on all of the players’ statistics and game results. He also loved Ohio State University football, having served as a “Red Coat” and a James Cancer Hospital volunteer at the Horseshoe. He followed all professional sports; but, he was devoted to the Cleveland sports teams.
Music performance was central in the Oberrath family all the way back to Curt’s great grandfather who conducted and played in a popular dance band in Cleveland. Curt’s forte was singing in various choruses and choirs throughout his life. He was proud to have been a member of the Mansfield Ohio Master Singers and the Otterbein Summer Chorale. He was also a devoted member of Sunday Choirs at his churches, most recently with the adult choir of the Church of the Resurrection in New Albany.
In his later life, Curt learned more about his direct ancestors, including his 4th great grandfather who founded the world renowned Hamley Toy Store of London, England. In his ancestry journey, Curt learned that he also had a direct linear line to a patriot of the American Revolution, James Newbury of Pennsylvania. As a result, Curt subsequently joined the central Ohio Benjamin Franklin Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The study of American history became a passion of Curt’s, especially as our country approached its 250th anniversary.
A funeral Mass will be held for Curt on Friday, July 10, 2026 at 11 am at the Church of the Resurrection, New Albany, Ohio. Father Dave Sizemore will officiate. Immediately following the service, burial will occur at Resurrection Cemetery, Lewis Center Ohio.
The family wishes to express their sincerest gratitude to the staff at Countryview of Sunbury and Bella Care Hospice for their enduring and exceptional care, compassion, and support. Their kindness and dedication brought comfort to everyone during Curt’s final year.
Curt was a volunteer for 17 years with Pelotonia, a Columbus, Ohio based non-profit that raises money for cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.
