Darryl Adrian Mayo, born on August 17, 1945, in Canton, Ohio, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on July 24, 2025, in Columbus, Ohio. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Darryl had a long and fulfilling career as a machinist for McDonnell Douglas, where he was instrumental in building B1 Bombers. He dedicated over 50 years to the industry, including teaching total quality control classes at the same company. In addition to his work in manufacturing, he also served as an insurance broker for Mayo Associates before retiring.
Darryl was a proud graduate of Canton-McKinley High School, where he played football. His commitment to hard work and excellence was evident throughout his life. He cherished every moment with his family and loved to call and hear about his grandkids' day every single day.
He was known for his outgoing personality and was described as hardworking, gregarious, and ornery. His passion for family and faith guided him through life, and he was always eager to share his stories and experiences with those around him.
He enjoyed various hobbies, including golfing, hunting, and weight lifting. Darryl was a power lifting competitor, having achieved 2nd place in the world's competition in his weight class during the 1980s. He also won numerous golf tournaments, making him a sought-after teammate. His athletic spirit carried him to play semi-pro football for the Canton Bulldogs and even earn a walk-on opportunity with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Darryl is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Suzanne; his sons, Darryl Jr. (Jennifer) Mayo and Stephen (Mary) Ray; his grandchildren, Savannah and Taylor Ray, Darryl Mayo III, Gabriella Mayo, Caleb Mayo, Ryan Bell, Paige, Taylor, Maddy, and Anthony; and his great-grandchildren, Rylee and Vaeda Bell, Nora, Dove, and Violet. He is also survived by his brother, Pete (Nancy) Mayo, and many extended family members.
Darryl was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Mildred (Bayless) Mayo.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Grace Life Church of the Nazarene in New Albany, Ohio, on August 9, 2025, with calling hours from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with a celebration starting at 11:00 AM. There will be food following the service. This will be a time for family and friends to come together to honor and remember Darryl's incredible life and the joy he brought to those around him.
