Daryl D. Bateman, 75, passed away Sunday, November 6, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Daryl was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 18, 1940, to the late Milton and Rose (Cashel) Bateman, and was raised by his mother and late step-father, Michael Burik. He is also preceded in death by his son, Michael Bateman.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Patricia (Palmer) Bateman; son, Matthew (Cynthia) Bateman; daughter Jennifer(David) Troutman; daughter-in-law, Tracy Bateman; sisters, Carol Bletz and Mary (Barry) Goodwin; brother, Milton "Buddy" (Susan) Bateman; grandchildren, Devon Bateman, Elizabeth Bateman, Emily Bateman, Christopher Bateman, Nicholas Bateman, Sophia Troutman, Isabella Troutman, Ava Troutman, Gavin Daryl Troutman; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Daryl honorably served in the US Navy from 1958-1961 on the USS Lexington. Daryl graduated from Kent State University in 1965 with a degree in Special Education. He taught and coached at Hudson High School; taught at Kent Roosevelt High School in Special Education; and Davey Middle School as a Guidance Counselor and Assistant Principal until 1992. After retiring from Kent City Schools, he returned to the field of education as principal of James A. Garfield Middle School. He worked at Streetsboro City Schools as Director of Special Education. Daryl consulted with Southeast Local Schools and worked as a part-time Guidance Counselor at Aurora High School. He finished his career by volunteering as the Coordinator of the Award of Merit Program at Maplewood Career Center in Ravenna in 2004.
In 2005, Daryl moved from Portage County to Westerville, Ohio where he lived until his death. He was a member of the Kent Presbyterian Church for 39 years and the Westerville Community United Church of Christ for 9 years. Daryl valiantly fought Alzheimer's since 2010 until he died peacefully at home. Daryl loved playing, coaching and watching many sports. He was a member of the Kent Lions Club where he received the Melvin E. Jones Fellow Award. He was also a member of the Ravenna Kiwanis Club, Portage and Delaware County Retired Teachers. Daryl contributed many hours of volunteerism throughout his 75 years.
Daryl's presence in this world impacted the lives of those he touched; family, students, teachers, parents, and friends. It was often said "He was a great storyteller and never met a stranger".
The family is planning a celebration of life memorial service for Daryl and Michael Bateman this summer in Kent, Ohio. Information will be available at a later date.
