Dewayne Vinson Carder of Orient, OH, passed away on November 2, 2016, at the age of 74, surrounded by his loving family.
He was diagnosed with cancer in March, 2016. He fought the disease with grace, great courage, and an ever-present smile.
He was born on February 26, 1942, in Marion County, WV, to the late Jack and Virginia (Pratt) Carder. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant sister, Rita Kay Carder.
Dewayne grew up in Athens County, OH, and attended Waterloo Local Schools in New Marshfield, OH. He played guard on the Waterloo Rockets High School basketball squad and caddied with his older brother Reid at the Athens County Club. After high school, he served in the United States Army with the 1st Armor Division/73rd Artillery at Fort Hood, TX. He was aboard a US troop ship, bound for Cuba, when the missile crisis there was peacefully resolved.
Following military service, Dewayne began a nearly 30-year career with General Motors at GM's Fisher Body Plant in Columbus, OH, and was a member of the United Auto Workers (UAW). He retired from GM in 1993. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed the camaraderie of friends at many Central Ohio courses.
Dewayne was much-beloved by family and friends for his many kindnesses, ability to bring people together, and overwhelming generosity. He was always there for family and friends. His neighbors - parents and their children - will miss "the Coach," who guided many youth sports teams and started a neighborhood youth organization.
Dewayne is survived by six children: Victoria (Bob) Bartlett, Christina (Brian) Slone, Brian (Sherri) Carder, Vance Thornton, Jessica Thornton, and William Ranney; siblings Reid (Susie) Carder, Raymond Carder, and Jacqueline Miller; ten grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and special friends Terry Davis and Taylor Kirk.
The family would like to thank the staffs of the Guardian Angels and National Church Residences for their friendly, compassionate, and professional care during Dewayne's illness.
