Donald Lee Gaal

Donald Lee Gaal, 71, of New Albany, passed away at home on September 10, 2026. Born in Columbus on December 7, 1954, he married Sally Engelhardt on August 30, 1987, his wife of 39 years.

Don is survived by his wife, Sally; daughters: Dianne Zemba, Audrey Ogden and Wendy Zemba; five grandchildren: Reece, Merric, Ansleigh and Chael Ogden and Joanna Cyr; and his siblings: Rick (Julia) Gaal, Johnna Chenault, John Turley (Kim) Gaal, and Gary Gaal plus many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elvera (Lamberson) Gaal and brother-in-law, Brian Chenault and nephew Gary Chenault.

Don worked as the Supervisor, Component Grind at Timken Company's Railroad Bearing Plant from which he retired in November 2002. During a layoff from Timken, Don met his wife, Sally, while working at Rockwell International. After retirement, Don returned to the work force as a Count Team Supervisor for the Hollywood Casino, Columbus. In his younger years, Don was an avid bowler, golfer and snow skier. In his leisure time Don loved to take cruises with Sally, to travel to Las Vegas where he enjoyed the camaraderie of the gambling tables and to spend time with family.

Don will be remembered by all for his hearty contagious laughter and big smile. He was a hard worker that was dedicated to his wife and stepdaughters who he embraced as his own. He was a proud grandparent who was fondly known as Papa. He doted on his grandchildren and they adored him. Don’s brothers and sister will miss all the inside jokes they shared and will never forget their childhood mischief.

Per Don’s request, he will be cremated and there will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Luminary Hospice who cared for him before death. The family will organize a celebration of life at a later date.
