Doris L. Steele, age 92 passed away Sunday, February 15 at her home in Grove City, Ohio. She is survived by her son David Steele (Judy), daughter Malia Steele, grandchildren John Matthew Steele (Tracy), Amanda Grace (Patrick), great-grandchildren Spencer Grace, Kyler, Ellie, and Gracyn Steele, sister-in-law Patty Collins (Rodney), and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by parents Lewis R. and Agnes Hill, and by her husband of 64 years, Dudley M. Steele.
Doris was born Dec 3, 1922 In Pickaway County and graduated from Scioto Township High School in 1940. She was Valedictorian of her senior class and served as class president in 1938, and class vice-president in 1937 and 1940. She was Girls Sports Editor for the Senior Yearbook and held membership in the Drama Club, Latin Club, Glee Club, Chorus and Orchestra. She participated in the Pickaway County Music Festival and was awarded a music scholarship to Capital University.
During WW II, Doris worked for The Cussins & Fearn Company in Columbus, Ohio and later served as school secretary at Scioto until 1952.
She met her Husband Dudley at the local grocery during the 1940's. Both the Steele and Hill families were members of Grange, and the couple often attended meetings together. They were married Jan 16, 1948, and moved to their Grove City residence in 1952.
Doris studied piano in elementary and high school and organ in the 1960's.
She was an exceptional cook and seamstress, and enjoyed traveling in retirement.
Doris and Dudley were lifelong members of the Grove City United Methodist Church, sang in the Chancel Choir, and later attended Harrisburg United Methodist Church where Doris served as organist. Dudley passed away June 13, 2012.
Services will be at Newcomer Southwest Chapel, 3393 Broadway, Grove City, OH 43123. Calling hours Thursday, February 19 at 11:00 AM followed by funeral at 1:00 PM. Pastor Ed Martin officiating. Internment at Muhlenberg-Darbyville Cemetery, 16905 London Road, Williamsport, Ohio.
