Our beloved Mother, Grandma, and Great-Grandma, Doris Jean (Lind) Stearns, passed away in the early morning hours Friday October 27, 2017 surrounded by her family. She was born on October 6, 1931 and raised in McKeesport, PA and graduated from McKeesport High School in 1949.
Doris is preceded in death by parents Harvey and Elizabeth Lind; husband, Edward Stearns; brothers, Daniel (Shirley) Lind and Victor (Roslyn) Lind, and sisters, Irene Lasky, and Anne (Bruce) Alexander.
Survived by children: Debra (Tom) Shields, Curt (Pam) Stearns, Phillip (Lisa) Stearns, and Amy (Dave) Lewis. Grandchildren: Adam Shields (Sara Morey), Lauren (Shane) Sockrider, Alex (Becci) Shields; Niki and Jani Stearns; Kory (Katie) Stearns, Lyndsay (Ryan) Holmes; Ian, Marisa, Isaac, and Gabe Lewis. Great-grandchildren Dylan and Daniel Sockrider; sister-in-law Lois (Jim) Greene, and several nieces and nephews.
Doris enjoyed many things in life: bowling, cooking (especially making hard-tack Christmas candy with her daughters and trying numerous times to copy her mother's braided bread recipe), planting flowers, reading her Harlequin romance novels, singing along to Don Ho and Charlie Rich albums, traveling abroad and sitting by the ocean. Doris was also an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers.
Her most precious memories were spent when she was with her family. She spent most of her time attending many school plays, music programs, sporting activities for her children and grandchildren. She also loved spending time with them at the pool at her home. But most of all, Doris loved Thanksgiving and Christmas (including the snow!) - as this was when she was surrounded by her loved ones.
Doris was a former member of Indianola Church of Christ where she sang in the choir for years. She retired from Keith L. Brown Realty in 1993. She was also previously employed by Sunlight Cleaners, Cussins and Fearn, and Thurns Meats.
Special acknowledgement to the staff at Friendship Village of Columbus - Ridgewood Terrace memory care unit - for their care and love over the last two years, and especially during the last week of her life. The family was overwhelmed by how much the staff loved their "feisty" mother.
