Dr. Bharat Oza, age 82, of Lewis Center, Ohio, and formerly of New Philadelphia, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2026.
Born in Rajkot, India, on November 2, 1943, Bharat was a son of the late Harshadrai and Chandanben Oza.
After graduating from Medical College Baroda in India and completing various residencies and teaching there, Bharat immigrated to the United States in July 1973, completing a residency at Queens Hospital Center and working in the New York City area. He then made the journey with his family to Tuscarawas County in 1977.
Holding positions at Union Hospital, Twin City Hospital, the Tuscarawas County Home, and various area nursing homes, Bharat ran his family medical practice offices in Dover, New Philadelphia, and Uhrichsville serving the needs of the area from November 1977 until ultimately retiring in 2016 and moving from New Philadelphia to Central Ohio to live closer to his children. While his retirement may have been a loss to the community, his move to the Columbus area was a successful transition to full-time family life, particularly as a proud grandfather.
Bharat was instrumental in helping the Indian community of Tuscarawas County and Northeast Ohio grow, along with many other friends who chose to raise their families in the area. He could be found enjoying cricket matches, taking care of his garden, and asking for a bowl of the hottest peppers in the restaurant. He was always excited to provide color and entertainment to countless gatherings and celebrations, with his singing and keyboard playing. He would be called upon to emcee many events and would gladly accept the invitation and lead in the laughter he enjoyed so much. He loved meeting with friends, and strangers who quickly became friends, as he easily found common ground with others, talking about shared interests or teaching something new.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Madhu Oza; his son, Ritesh Oza of Lewis Center, daughter Reena Oza-Frank (Matt Frank) of Westerville; granddaughter, Avni Frank; his brother, Dipak Oza (Abha Oza) of North Potomac, MD; as well as his nieces and nephews in Maryland, New York, and India.
In addition to his parents, Bharat was preceded in death by his brothers, Navin and Kirit.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bharatiya Hindu Temple in Powell.
