Earl Chafins Sr.

God has called our precious father home to be with our precious mother, and with all of his precious love, on October 1, 2026 in Columbus, OH at the age of 89.

He was born to the late Joe Chafins and Edith Baisden (Lawson) Chafins on the January 24, 1937 at the head of Breeden near Kirk, WV. As a young boy, he along with his brothers would cut timber to sell to make money for the family. His father was a coal miner and during the great migration from WV to OH in the early 1950’s he as an under aged teen worked in construction. He later went back to WV and met the love of his life. Roberta Kirk, to whom he made his wife on July 9, 1955. Afterwards, he back to Columbus where he started working at Buckeye Steel Castings and started their family a year later when their son Earl Jr. was born. They were married 71 years. He was our mother’s caregiver. He had become a great cook, making what we called "Dad’s Surprise" of beef and vegetables with his seasonings wrapped in foil. He was a devout Baptist, and until they become sick, attended church regularly.

He is predeceased by his wife, Roberta; his parents, Joe and Edith Chafins; grandson, Mark Hite, Jr; son-in-law, Mark Hite Sr.; brothers, Homer Chafins, Leroy Chafins, and Charles Ray Chaffins; sister, Bonnie Gail Chafins-Canter; and brother-in-law, Edgar Kirk.

He is survived by his sons, Earl Jr, Robert Allan (Lisa), and Randall Leon (Tina) Chafins; his loving daughter, Janice Kay Chafins-Hite; special niece, Christine Kirk; sisters, Katherine (George) Francis, Irene Marcum, Geraldine Marcum; brother, Paul Chaffins; sister-in-laws, Naomi, Edna, and Bessie; brother-in-law Chester Kirk; grandchildren, Harrison Hite, Meshelle (Aaron) Cloud, Elizabeth, Hite, Jodi (Richard) Bensema, Randall Chafins Jr., Sara (Elliott Willison) Chafins, Michael Chafins, Shawn Chafins, Robyn Chafins, Marienda Chafins, and Kaeleb Chafins; as well as 23 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on Tuesday, October 13th, 2026, at Newcomer Funeral Home, SW Chapel, 3393 Broadway, Grove City, Ohio (614-539-6166). A funeral service will be held at 10:00am the next morning, Wednesday, October 14th, 2026, in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Rick Baldwin officiating. Graveside services will immediately follow at Fernwood Cemetery (460 Rowe Road, Lockbourne, Ohio 43137).
