Deacon Elwood Moss, 99, of Hilliard, Ohio; went to eternal rest on July 16, 2024 at home, surrounded by his family. He was born in Urbana, Ohio to the late Leroy and Caroline (Roberts) Moss, Sr. He married Mary Woods on September 4, 1970 in Columbus. Celebrating 46 wonderful years together, Mary passed on September 6, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, and wife Mary, his sons, Robert Moss and Elwood Moss, Jr., step-children Joseph Woods, Jr., Ophelia Peacock, and his 13 brothers and sisters. Deacon served in the United States Army, enlisting in Frebruary of 1944. He served in the central grounds of the European Theatre from February of 1945 until late August of 1945, receiving the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharge in November of 1945, only to reenlist again to serve until January of 1947. After the military, Elwood worked for Columbus City Schools and retired from there. Deacon Moss was the oldest member of Divine. He joined the church at the inception under the leadership of our founder, Overseer Bertha P.C. Wright-Gilbert. Being such a willing servant, Deacon Moss was appointed by our late Bishop George C. Plummer, II to serve as a deacon. He was faithful in serving wherever he could within the church. He sang with the Brotherhood, was part of the custodial crew of the church, and was known for his quit wit and humor. Those left to cherish Elwood’s memory include children, Nancy (Harold) Beavers, Debbie Mapp, Shelva Hall, Kathy Smith, Ronnie Moss; Bonnie (David) Newland; and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.
