Frances "Janie" Vasquez (nee Saunders) passed away Sunday, October 6th while zip lining in Grizzly Falls and viewing the Northern Lights.
Born June 6th, 1948, the lover of all things chocolate was married to her sweetheart Ignacio "Joe" Vasquez. Through his work, they had the opportunity to travel the country, landing in glamorous places such as Midwest City, Oklahoma, San Bernadino, California, Wilmington, Delaware, Olympia, Washington, and Honolulu, where she was fortunate enough to have a chance encounter with Jack Lord. Eventually they made their way back to her home state of Ohio.
She worked in the home as a maid, a short order cook, school room mom, watcher of sports (of her not very athletic children), finder of missing library books, and supporter of the local teen theater program (where her non-athletic children found a better fit). She was an avid bowler, card player and penny slot lover. All stray friends brought home were fed and made family.
She is preceded in death by her father and mother, John and Eva Saunders, sister Linda (Saunders) Kline, her cat Carter, and various mice, goldfish, and chinchilla that her kids insisted on bringing into the house.
Her memory lives on in the heart of her husband Joe, who loved her hard for over fifty years, despite the best friend's mother's proclamation that it wouldn't last when the couple married two and a half months after meeting on a blind date. And despite having once had a cherry pie thrown at him. She lives on in her son Joey (wife Liz Ekstrom, son Nicholas), who was always there for their Sunday breakfast meet ups. Her memory lives on in her daughter Kristie Sahayda (husband Pete, sons Rowan and Auden), who was always attempting to get her to do shots or go skydiving. She is survived by her daughter Lisa (daughter Jasmine), daughter-in-her-heart Rebecca Vasquez, her sisters Marilou Clare (Tom) and Lois "Sissy" Culbertson (Saunders) and her brothers John Saunders (Diana) and Jim Saunders (Barb), and of course Axel, her little girl cat. She will always be in the hearts of her ladies, Big Sandy, Little Sandy, and Barb.
In her usual "don't look at me" style, there will be no funeral, but rather a small celebration of life featuring her favorite carrot cake and Dixieland Jazz band music. No somber attire please.
Her family would like to thank the staff, nurses, and doctors who cared for at Mount Caramel East, especially Sherry and Stephanie in the Neurology ICU. Your compassion and love was immeasurable.
A visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30am Saturday at the Newcomer NE Chapel 3047 E. Dublin Granville Road Columbus, OH 43231.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer society, or the Mount Caramel Foundation's Guardian Angel campaign.
