Frances "Fran" Welsh, a vibrant spirit who embraced life with unwavering passion and boundless curiosity, passed away on June 8, 2026, in Columbus, Ohio. Born on April 10, 1940, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Fran’s journey was a tapestry woven with love, adventure, and a fearless spirit that defied convention at every turn.

A proud graduate of Saint Ursula Academy and Mount Saint Joseph in Cincinnati, Fran’s English degree became more than just a credential—it was the cornerstone of her early years dedicated to raising her four children. Her nurturing touch was evident as she encouraged them to delve into dictionaries and sound out words, cultivating both intellect and independence within her household. Fran’s home was a sanctuary of learning, laughter, and a peculiar yet memorable instance of family comedy: one evening, seeking an appropriate film for family movie night, she selected “Eating Raoul,” only to realize it was far from suitable. This misadventure sparked a family joke that would echo through the years, a testament to Fran’s good humor and ability to find joy even in mishaps.

Fran was never one to be tethered by time—she refused to wear a watch, believing that if she did, its face would read simply “NOW.” This mantra guided her throughout life, embracing spontaneity and adventure like a compass for the soul. Be it wandering the streets of Spain and China or hiking the serene woods near home, Fran’s zest for exploration was infectious. She delighted equally in the simple pleasures, such as shopping, sewing clothes for her children, gardening, and experimenting with recipes discovered in newspapers. Her deep love for the ocean and the beach provided a peaceful counterpoint to her adventurous heart.

Her later years saw Fran blossom into a beloved activities director at several retirement communities in Columbus, culminating in her role at First Community Village. Here, she continued to share her vivacity with those around her, facilitating joy and connection in a world that often feels hurried and fragmented.

Fran gave wholeheartedly to her community, volunteering at St. Michael School during her children’s attendance and dedicating two decades of song to the Newman Center choir. Her vocal presence was not simply heard but felt—a reflection of her devotion to causes she believed in, including Right to Life and Birthright. Through these commitments, Fran’s compassionate spirit rippled outward, touching countless lives.

In all aspects of her extraordinary life, Fran was a woman who pushed limits and lived fiercely. Even in her final days, she embarked on a trip to Hocking Hills just a week before her passing—her courage persisting through twenty years of battling cancer, surviving two fierce battles before finally succumbing to the third. Her resilience was as steadfast as her love for life.

Frances Welsh is survived by her cherished children Timothy (Amy), J. Patrick (Connie), Anne, and Terrence (Danielle); her nine grandchildren: Alex, Jordan, Sarah, Faith, Kevin, Kyle, Madison, Allison, and William; and her two great-grandchildren, Lily and Layla. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents Francis and Ann Richter, as well as her sister Maricarol and brother Paul.

Fran’s legacy is one of fearless living, radiant laughter, and unconditional love. Her life invites us to seize the moment, to explore without hesitation, and to cherish the connections that weave our stories together. She was, in every essence, a dazzling force of nature.
