Francis S. Valent, known lovingly to family and friends as Frank, age 77, of Grove City, Ohio, passed away on May 20, 2026. He was born on March 13, 1949, in Ilion, New York, to Samuel and Wanda Valent, who preceded him in death.
Frank earned his bachelor’s degree in Ceramic Engineering from Alfred University in Frankfort, New York, and his career took him across Wisconsin, California, and Missouri before he eventually made his home in Columbus, Ohio, where he retired from Tosoh SMD after 20 years. Frank was honored to receive a patent for Hewlett Packard while at Tosoh. Wherever he went, Frank brought with him a steady presence, a great sense of humor, and a gift for making others feel welcome.
Frank loved golf and could often be found on the course several times a week, even well into retirement. He also loved the beach, sunshine, and any chance to relax by the pool. Most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends, sharing stories, and making people laugh. He was truly the life of the party, and his warmth and laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Mary Valent; his daughters, Regina Valent and Nicole Valent; Regina’s partner, Steven Turner; Nicole’s partner, Kevin Cheney; his bonus daughter, Amy Hall, and her husband, Tony Hall; his bonus son, Mark Applegate, and his partner, Lauren Maddern; his grandchildren, KC Schaible and Emily and Chris Mays; his great-granddaughter, Valerie; his cousins, David Valent, and his wife, Elaine, of Lebanon, Ohio; Phyllis Donadio Shelton, of Virginia; closest friends John and Emily Kipper of New York; Anthony and Susan Cardinal of Ohio, and many close friends in and around Grove City, Ohio.
Frank also had a deep love for dogs and animals, and throughout his life, he cared for seven dogs. His compassion for animals was just one more reflection of his kind and generous heart. His last best friend, Teddy, was beside him when he passed.
Frank’s calling hours will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a short service to follow, at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3393 Broadway, Grove City, OH 43123.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Speak! for the Unspoken, P.O. Box 534 Grove City, OH 43123 in Frank’s honor.
