Frederick George Yun, 89, of New Albany, OH, passed away on July 8, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Fred was born to the late Frank and Ann (Bavolar) Yun on March 21, 1937 in Duquesne, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Delhaas High School, where he played basketball and baseball. Fred’s immediate family included two late brothers, Ron and Frank, Jr..
In April of 1959, Fred married his Juniata college sweetheart, Barbara (Smathers) Yun. After serving in the army from 1960 to 1963, Fred and Barb moved to Indiana, Pennsylvania where they raised their family of four children. They were blessed to share 63 wonderful married years together until Barb’s passing in 2023.
Fred earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in 1965 and a Master’s degree in History from IUP in 1968. While in college, Fred played on the Juniata and IUP college basketball teams.
Fred taught history, law, social studies, and economics at the Blairsville and Indiana Area high schools for over 32 years, where he was known as a dedicated teacher and mentor to his students. In addition to his work in the classroom, Fred served as the high school varsity head basketball coach at both Blairsville and Indiana, amassing over 20 years on the bench and being recognized three times as Coach of the Year. He also served as an assistant baseball coach and head athletic director at Indiana and was a basketball official for 37 years. At Indiana, Fred worked with high school Key Club members for over 10 years as their advisor.
Beyond his professional life, Fred was deeply committed to his community through decades of service with the Kiwanis club, where he held club leadership roles including President, Secretary, and district Lieutenant Governor, received numerous achievement awards, and helped lead many service activities. As one of his proudest Kiwanis accomplishments, Fred started and oversaw Pennsylvania’s first and only prison-based Kiwanis club. He was also a Pennsylvania state-certified Master Gardener and demonstrated his passion for plants by building and maintaining several community garden spaces in Indiana. In honor of his service, he was voted Indiana County Civic Leader of the Year in 2008.
Fred lived in New Albany, OH from 2013-26. The last several of those years he lived in The Avalon of New Albany senior community, where he was president of the resident council, active in leading many activities (including his weekly trivia game), and became known as the unofficial “mayor” of the community.
Fred’s life embodied a deep commitment to helping and mentoring young people and serving others that was evidenced by his many years of teaching and coaching and by his long and active commitment to the Kiwanis club. He will be remembered for his steady leadership, generous spirit, and lasting impact on the many people who witnessed his acts of service. In particular, his legacy of positive outlook, service, and kindness to all will remain an inspiration for all generations of his family.
Fred is survived by four children: Curt Yun (Kelly) of Venice, FL; Sharon Ebersole of Westerville, OH; Vicki Foster (Bruce) of Lewis Center, OH; and Keith Yun (Lynn) of Venice, FL. He also is survived by seven grandchildren.
