BUTCHKO
George S. Butchko, age 92, passed away on Dec. 15, 2016, at the Madison House in London, Ohio. He was born in Carpenter's Park, PA on Nov 10, 1924 to George and Mary (Havrilak) Butchko.
He attended Conemaugh Twp. H.S. and Lock Haven State Teacher's College. George taught Geography in Md., Wyo., and Ariz., with the majority of his teaching career in Scottsdale Ariz. His teaching led to travel and learning experiences throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
He was involved in athletics all his life and participated in Sr. Olympics competitions throughout the U.S.
George proudly served his country as a member of "The Greatest Generation" in the Navy during WWII. He took part in the battle of Iwo Jima, where he earned a Purple Heart. He participated in the Columbus Veteran's Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to visit the WWII Memorial.
George is survived by brothers; Joseph, John, Paul, and Stephen and sisters; Helen Royer, Pauline Rogers, Eleanor Borzcik, Justine Rusinko, and Juliana Mills. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Margaret, infant George, Elizabeth, Anna Chinchar, Mary Wilkerson, and Michael.
To honor George's wishes, a Military Service will be held at Sunset Cemetery at a later date.
