Listen to Obituary

Bill Fenneken, 87, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, at OSU Hospital. He was born on November 21, 1938, in Zanesville, Ohio, to George and Edna Fenneken of Columbus, Ohio, who preceded him in death.

Bill developed a love for both trombone and basketball at a young age, passions he carried with him throughout his life. He was the valedictorian of the Corning High School Class of 1956. He went on to graduate from Ohio University in 1961 with a degree in Civil Engineering. While in college, Bill worked on the railroad as a locomotive fireman during breaks to help pay for his education.

After graduation, Bill began what would become a 34-year career with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). He and his father once drove up to the ODOT building, and his father remarked, “That looks like a nice place to work.” Bill went inside, introduced himself as a civil engineer seeking a job, and was hired on the spot. He then informed them he would need two years off to enlist in the U.S. Army. With their approval, Bill served in Iran before returning to begin his long and dedicated career. He retired in 1997.

In retirement, Bill enjoyed collecting model trains, building elaborate Department 56 holiday villages, gardening, and—most importantly—spending time with his family. He and his family made their home in Forest Park West for 60 years and were long-standing members of Epworth United Methodist Church.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Cheryl (Dresbach) Fenneken; his daughters, Lori (John) Meyer of Westerville and Amy (Jon) Fulton of Lewis Center; his grandchildren, Elisabeth (Zach) Burnett, Jonny Fulton, and Grace Fulton; his great-grandchildren who he adored, Piper and Finley Burnett; and his cousin Gwen (Tom) Senerius and family.

A celebration of life will be held from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM on April 25, 2026, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 5100 Karl Rd, Columbus, OH, where family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and honor a life well lived. A luncheon will be provided during this time, offering an opportunity for fellowship and reflection of the lasting impact of a truly remarkable man.
