Harry E. Chadwick

July 13, 1936 — January 2, 2016

Harry E. Chadwick, age 79, passed away peacefully at Doctor's Hospital with his son Harry at his side on January 2, 2016. Harry was born in Columbus on July 13, 1936, to the late Richard and Nanny Chadwick.

He attended Central High School where he played baseball. He won his first two games pitching a double-header against Lancaster as he continued on to a perfect pitching record, earning All-State honors in baseball. He also earned All-City honors in football and was a member of the National Honor Society before graduating in 1955. He married his wife of 60 years, Betty, and joined the Army out of high school. He served in the European Command from 1955-57. He earned several unit citations as well as the Good Conduct medal.

He joined the Columbus Division of Police in 1963 as a police officer, during which time he earned his Associate Degree in Law Enforcement from Columbus State in 1974. He earned many awards, commendations and a promotion to Sergeant during his distinguished career which concluded with his retirement in 1989. He was a lifetime member of the FOP. As a loyal and proud blood donor he donated over 11 gallons to the Red Cross.

He was an excellent Horseshoe Pitcher, earning induction into the Ohio Horseshoe Pitcher's Hall of Fame. Harry pitched in many local, state and national tournaments, many times, winning his class. He had previously pitched at Whetstone Park and the New Rome Indoor League. Harry was a member of the NHPA and most recently pitched in the Hilliard Horseshoe League. You would occasionally hear Harry shout his classic, "You maverick," if he lost a sure ringer. Golfing was also a passion of Harry's and he really enjoyed his annual golf trips. During these trips, he traveled with his brother-in-law, John Ciardelli, and John's sons. John and his sons were very good to Harry and those golf trips meant the world to him.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Beverly Kawasaki and granddaughter, Michelle Stover. He is survived by his dedicated wife, Betty Chadwick, children, Sandy (Mike), Darlene (Jim), Harry, Mike and Margie (Keith), sister Juanita, brothers, Carl, Jim and Robert, 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Harry loved his family and always tried to find good in everyone. He was truly a great father, grandfather and friend to all that knew him. Harry will always be remembered as loving to tell jokes, while doing all he could to help others. It would be appropriate to thank the incredible doctors, nurses and staff that are Doctor's West Hospital and Ohio Health Hospice. They were extraordinarily compassionate while caring for Harry in his final days. He will be sadly missed by all.
