Herbert Hazard

August 4, 1917 — March 9, 2015

Herbert Ray Hazard
Long time Upper Arlington resident, Herb Hazard passed away on 3/9/2015 following an extraordinary and well-lived life of 97 ½ years. Born in Johnson City, New York on 4 August 1917, he grew up in Kane, PA. Upon graduation from Kane High School, he won a four-year scholarship to Penn State University where he graduated as a Mechanical Engineer with varsity letters in three sports.

He moved to Columbus, OH in 1945. For most of his professional life, he directed research and development projects at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus. These included the development of the Nuclear power plant for the first US Navy nuclear submarine, the Nautilus. He was a leader in the development of jet engine technology for which he earned six patents. As chairman of the gas turbine committee of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, he helped create industry standards for the design, development and production of gas turbine engines and was made a Fellow of the ASME. He wrote more than 35 technical papers that were published in leading technical journals worldwide. He also edited several technical books including the Deep Water Diving Manual for the US Navy. For many years he also led groundbreaking research in synthetic fuels under US Navy contracts. He retired from Battelle in 1983 but continued to consult on technical projects for another ten years. Herb is survived by daughter, Carol Ellen Babka (John) of Belleair, FL, and sons Christopher Hazard (Sally) of Alexandria, VA, Bruce Hazard (Beth) of Upper Arlington, OH and his six grandchildren: David, Justin and Deborah Hazard of Upper Arlington, Kate Babka of Chicago, Mark Hazard of Houston TX, and Julie Hazard of Chatsworth, CA. Herb was predeceased by his wife of more than 50 years, Ellen C. Hazard and grandson Jack Babka.

Herb was an avid sailor, for many years skippering his "Miss Hap" Thistle #283 at the Leatherlips Yacht club. He won a number of trophies at local and regional regattas as well as competing in numerous Thistle National Championships. He was an exceptional pianist who could attract an appreciative audience while playing the standards from the good old days. His other avocations included photography, snorkeling, international travel, and a life long love of learning. He attended numerous "Elder Hostel" seminars at various universities and was a frequent participant in the Ohio State University seniors' program. Herb spent many happy hours at the UA Senior Center, teaching computer classes, participating in current event discussions, and meeting and grilling local political leaders on their positions.

A truly good and honest man of the highest moral character, may he rest in peace.
