Homer H. Gearheart, affectionately known as "Mo," passed away peacefully at home on December 14, 2025, after a brave eight-year battle with cancer. Born on February 24, 1949, in Blue Field, West Virginia, Mo lived a life filled with love, laughter, and commitment to his family and community.
For over 43 years, Mo dedicated himself to his career on the railroad, serving as a supervisor with a profound sense of responsibility and care. His journey began with the New York Central, continued with Conrail, and he ultimately retired from Norfolk Southern. Colleagues and friends alike will remember him for his easy-going nature, endless kindness, and unparalleled work ethic.
Mo was not just a devoted professional; he was a beloved family man, recognized for being a GREAT husband to his high school sweetheart and partner of 59 years, Lana Pauletta Gearheart. Together, they created a warm and loving home, and he cherished the life they built, especially their three daughters: Missy (Steve) Sturgell, Debra Gearheart, and Lana Jo (George) Smith. His pride extended further to his grandchildren: Michael (Natalie) Sturgell, Jordan Sturgell, Brandon Sturgell, Matthew Smith, and Abby (Alex) Smith, as well as his great-grandchildren, Micheal Sturgell, Jr. and Kyla Sturgell. Mo also held a special place in his heart for his grandpuppy, Sage Gearheart.
Beyond family, Mo was an individual who embraced life fully. He found joy in hunting, fishing, and bowling, and he often sought adventure at the casino, where he loved the slots. A devoted Ohio State Buckeye fan, Mo also treasured the moments spent traveling, particularly to his favorite destination, Myrtle Beach.
Mo's personality could only be described as one of a kind. His gentle demeanor and the respect he garnered from everyone who knew him reflected the essence of a man who put family first and valued friendships deeply. He is preceded in death by his father, Frank Arthur Gearheart, and his mother, Hazel Louise McFarland.
In celebration of his remarkable life, a visitation will be held on December 21, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM, both taking place at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest, located at 3393 Broadway in Grove City, Ohio.
Homer H. Gearheart will forever be remembered by those who loved him dearly. His legacy of love, strength, and devotion to family will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
