Hubert Albert Runyon, affectionately known as Hugh, passed away on June 5, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on September 22, 1940, in Kentucky, Hugh lived a life rich with love, laughter, and an unwavering spirit of giving.
Throughout his career, Hugh served as a maintenance supervisor for Townhomes Management, a position where he not only excelled professionally but also met the love of his life, Jeneva. Their bond was one of deep compassion and generosity, evident in the cherished memories they created together, especially around Christmas and Thanksgiving. Each year, they embarked on a mission to bring joy to families in need, purchasing gifts for children and providing turkeys to ensure that others could partake in the warmth of the holiday season.
Hugh was not just a devoted husband, but also a proud father who took immense pride in his children. He is survived by his loving daughter, Jamie Fae (Brandon) Allen, son, Joseph Vance, son-in-law, Dennis Decker, sister, Julia (Larry) Persons, and a host of grandchildren: Jessica Podas, Angela Frazzini, Donovan Veeley, Drake Allen, Evelyn Allen, Joseph Vance, Christie Brown, Janet Caperna, Ben Vance as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The legacy of love and laughter he built lives on through each of them.
A proud Navy veteran, Hugh enlisted in 1959 and was honorably discharged in 1963. His service allowed him to circumnavigate the globe three times, a journey he cherished, particularly his experiences in the Antarctic aboard the ship affectionately nicknamed Daisy May, the last wooden ship before the transition to metal vessels. His military background instilled in him a sense of loyalty and camaraderie that extended to his friendships, which were numerous and deeply valued. Hugh was known as a jokester, always bringing a smile to those around him with his humor, teasing personality, and heartfelt kindness.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Hugh will remember his ornery spirit and his willingness to give the shirt off his back to a friend. He had an infectious laugh and a penchant for making light of any situation. Hugh adored animals, reading the Bible, and found solace in gardening, nurturing life both in his home and outside. He missed Jeneva dearly following her passing, and it is evident that she remained a significant part of his heart until the very end.
Hugh is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jeneva Runyon, alongside a host of family members who now welcome him with open arms. These include his father, John Frank Runyon, mother, Pearl Elizabeth Runyon, daughters Edith Decker and Cheryl Vance-Veeley, and son Pat Vance, as well as siblings: Ethel Hackwork, Thelma Runyon, Barbara McKee, Curtis Runyon, John Runyon, Charles Runyon, Paul Runyon, and Bill Runyon.
A viewing for Hugh will take place on June 15, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northeast, located at 3047 E Dublin Granville Rd, Columbus, OH. This will be followed by a funeral service on June 16, 2025, at 10:00 AM. He will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Garden.
As we bid farewell to Hugh Runyon, we celebrate the remarkable life he led, the love he shared, and the endless joy he brought to those fortunate enough to have known him. His legacy of kindness, humor, and love for family will forever be etched in our hearts.
