It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Jama Darlene Lykins, who went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 9th, at the age of 75 after a prolonged illness. Jama was a beloved wife, mother, Grandmother “Nana”, sister, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law, and friend to many including long-time childhood best friends Bobbe Jo McClenaghan and Nancy Mitchell.
Born on July 12, 1949 in Dayton, Ohio, Jama is survived by her husband Jerry Lykins of 30 years, children, Aaron (Suzanne) Sellers, Shelly (Chris) Getreu, Jennifer Nail, Grandchildren Danielle (Donald) Kessler, Emma and Lauren Sellers, siblings Ron (Anna) Kozuh, Bob (Jami) Freshcorn, Vicki Freshcorn, Jeff (Jessica) Freshcorn, and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and in-laws. She was preceded in death by her parents James Kozuh & Myrna Kozuh (Freshcorn), Bob Freshcorn, Uncles Bill Sturgill, Charlie Malone, Aunts Patti Devereux, Carol Malone, and Brenda Sturgill. Also preceded in death by her beloved dogs through the years CJ and Daisy and George-Jet her cat of 15+ years she loved them all unconditionally.
Jama’s family moved to Grove City around 1956 where she grew up and attended Richard Avenue Elementary School, Brookpark Middle School, and Grove City High School where she graduated in 1968. Special thanks to Kathy Huffman and her family for allowing Jama to live with them during her senior year. During those years the Sellers’ family played an important role of her early life.
Jama started her career in teaching at Georgesville Elementary for special needs children, taught Pre-Kindergarten at Grove City Presbyterian Church, then was employed in HR with Pickett Suites Hotel and Donatos at its corporate office, Quest, Highlights for Children, she spent several election cycles working for the Franklin County Board of Elections and was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Jama was also a devoted Ohio State Fan and loved cheering on her Buckeyes.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 14 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and funeral service on Thursday, May 15th at 10:30 a.m. at Newcomer - 3393 Broadway, Grove City, Ohio 43123 with burial at Grove City Cemetery and reception to follow. Details for reception will be provided at the service. All who knew and loved Jama are welcome to attend and celebrate her life.
