James Chi Shiung Chao was born on October 2, 1941 in Tainan, Tawain to the late Mao Zung and Mei-Chih (Chang) Chao. His loving family includes three brothers, Tom, Felix, and Michael and two sisters, Helen and Grace who came from humble beginnings. Life was difficult for the family and not without struggles, but James never failed to appreciate what he had and where he came from. From his upbringing he learned the value of hard work during these times of hardship where he had various jobs which included working in a candy factory and a butcher shop to help provide.
His hard work provided him a strong work ethic which propelled him to excel in school and later to go on to Christ's College in Taipei, Taiwan. While there, he met Hope, the cousin of his future wife, Joyce (Lin) Chao. Hope planned a meeting between the two where James would travel by train to Kaoshiung to the elementary school where she taught. A letter was sent to her about this plan, however, she would not receive the letter until after his arrival. Upon their meeting she had no idea who he was and why he was there, but for James, he knew that she was the one. They would later marry after a long courtship on August 14, 1971. He would devote over 42 years of his life to her and raise two children, Bernard and Michelle Chao in the United States.
As a family man he is best remembered as a devoted husband and father, brother and uncle, driven by his faith. He exemplified God in all he did by exhibiting strong compassion for others and always putting others before himself. His most favorite passions in life were singing hymns, playing the harmonica, building various wood working projects, and planting vegetable and flower gardens.
As a business man he is known as a long time restaurant entrepreneur in the Columbus and West Jefferson area. His belief was to treat his customers with the highest regards which resulted in regulars returning week after week as well as long lasting friendships being established. He spent over 30 years in the restaurant business until his retirement.
After many years of devoted service to his family, work, and church, James was ready for his next calling. James returned home to be with his Heavenly Father on May 13, 2014. His loving family was gathered by his side.
