Listen to Obituary

Janet Sue Rhoades, 84, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on May 25, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on July 28, 1941, in Columbus, Ohio, Janet was the daughter of the late George and Lola Adams. She was a 1959 graduate of Whitehall-Yearling High School and earned her degree in Education from The Ohio State University in 1964.

Janet began her career as an educator, teaching first grade at Heimandale Elementary School in Columbus City Schools from 1964 to 1970. She later joined The Ohio State University, where she worked for 28 years in business and psychiatry within the College of Medicine. Affectionately known as the "den mother" of the Psychiatry residency program, Janet had a special gift for caring for others. She looked after residents as if they were family, offering guidance, encouragement, and a friendly ear whenever it was needed.

A devoted member of First Community Church for more than 40 yeas, Janet found joy in faith, friendship, and service. She was active in several organizations, including TWIG 127 and her Garden Club. She enjoyed connecting with others, giving back to her community, and cultivating many lifelong friendships that she treasured throughout her life.

Janet had a lifelong love of reading and found great joy in crocheting, tending to her plants, playing cards, and baking treats that she loved sharing with family and friends. She appreciated life's simple pleasures and was happiest when surrounded by the people she loved.

Above all, Janet loved her family. She took great pride in her children and grandchildren and treasured time spent with family, friends, nieces, and nephews. Her kindness, generosity, and gentle spirit touched countless lives.

Janet was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 47 years, William "Bill" E. Rhoades; her son, Andrew Rhoades; her sister, Shirley Mehl; and her brothers, David and George Adams.

She is survived by her daughter, Amy (Jeff) Whetzel; her cherished grandchildren, Lucie, Thomas, and Sadie Whetzel; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

The family would like to extend special gratitude to Dr. Ajay Bhatia, Ann Haney, Charlie Zias, Craig Mehl, and the many friends whose companionship, kindness, and support enriched Janet's life, especially in her later years.

Janet will be remembered for her love of family, her dedication to education and service, her lifelong friendships, and the warmth and grace she brought to everyone she met. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of Janet's life on Monday, June 8, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at First Community Church North Campus, 3777 Dublin Road, Columbus, Ohio 43221. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m.
