Jerry D. Collins, a 1960 graduate of McArthur HS, and Bliss College basketball star, died at the age of 72 last week. Jerry is survived by his daughter Kelly Bragg, his son Scott Collins, brother Joe, and, having never met a stranger, many friends he loved.
Jerry moved his family from McArthur to Grove City in 1967. He went to work for Columbia Gas until his retirement in 1997.
Ever the active sportsman, Jerry played baseball, basketball and football growing up. He focused on basketball in college and was "The Playmaker" on the famed "Bliss Super Six" team that dropped a national record 207 points on Oberlin in 1966.
He remained an avid athlete throughout his life, adding golf and softball to the mix. Jerry played left field for the Oskey Sales and Cardo's Pizza softball teams. Both teams consistently appeared in the national spotlight, and Jerry was elected to the Columbus Softball Hall of Fame in 2003.
Always the adventurer, Jerry combined his love of sports cars and driving with a tour of the United States. He completed his goal of visiting all 48 states shortly after his retirement.
Family will receive friends Monday, November 17, 2014 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3393 Broadway in Grove City.
