John A. Hughes, a cherished member of the Columbus and Grove City communities, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, at Story Point in Grove City. Born on January 28, 1932, in Prospect, Ohio, John lived a rich and purposeful life marked by service, devotion to family, and passion for education and community.

A proud veteran, John honorably served his country during the Korean War as a member of the United States Marine Corps. His commitment to his nation was matched by his dedication to nurturing minds and spirits in the classroom. As a retired teacher from Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools, John inspired countless students through his science and driver’s education classes and further enriched their school experience by coaching basketball and tennis. Beyond his professional contributions, he faithfully served as an usher at Crossroads Methodist Church, demonstrating his steady presence and willingness to help in his community.

John’s warmth extended beyond people to the animals of his neighborhood, where he was known for lovingly feeding every stray that crossed his path. His compassionate nature and joy in spending time with family were hallmarks of his character, leaving lasting impressions on those fortunate to know him.

He is survived by his loving children—Kathy (Larry) Hartman, Stephen Hughes, Elizabeth (Keith) Freeman, and Brenda (John) Marquis—who carry forward his legacy of kindness and dedication. His grandchildren, Amiee (Matt) Hines, Jeffrey Crawford, Jaime (Joseph) Williamson, Joshua Hughes, Melody Foster, Joseph (Lisa) Freeman, Lindsay (Jeff) Good, Jessica (David) Miller, Kaitlin (Brian) Kelly, Liam (Karissa) Marquis, and Kiera Marquis, along with numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins, also continue to cherish his memory. John’s brother, Robert Hughes, and special friend, Mary Lou Chaffin, remain close companions whose lives he touched deeply.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Dana and Doris (Shark) Hughes; his beloved wife of 44 years, Barbara (Turner) Hughes; daughter-in-law, Gail Hughes; sister-in-law, Carole Hughes; brother-in-law, Stephen Turner; as well as a gradson-in-law, Adam Foster. Their memories are held with reverence by all who knew him.
