John E. Tinney, a devoted family man, dedicated community member, and retired postal worker, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, at Mount Carmel Hospital in Grove City, Ohio. Born on August 4, 1936, in Braxton County, West Virginia, John’s life was marked by service, faith, and a passion for lifelong learning and family.

John honorably served his country as a member of the United States Army, a commitment that reflected his steadfast character and dedication to duty. After his military service, he built a respectable career with the United States Postal Service, from which he retired with pride.

He was a faithful member of Highland Baptist Church in Grove City, where he was deeply involved in the Deaf Ministry, not only contributing his fluency in American Sign Language but also fostering a welcoming and inclusive spirit within the church community. His faith was a cornerstone throughout his life, sustaining him and inspiring those around him.

John’s personal interests were many and delightful. He was an avid fisherman, finding peace and joy by the water’s edge. A passionate collector of HAM radios, he enjoyed the intricate world of communications technology. Gardening was another of his great loves, especially nurturing his prized tomatoes and green peppers, which brought color and life to his garden and joy to his table. Above all, John cherished the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose presence brightened his days.

His family was the heart of his world. John is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Carol Sue; his daughter Amanda (Jim) Altieri; his sister Marilyn (John) Speakman; and his brother Bill (Sharon) Tinney. He is also lovingly remembered by 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his father, John B. Tinney; his mother, Yula Wilson; his brother, Donald L. Tinney; his son, John D. Tinney; and his daughter, Melinda Carol Anderson.
