Jonathon Maurice Armstrong Black, of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly Columbus Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on February 10, 2026.
He is lovingly survived by his parents, Sean and Joi (Armstrong) Black, his only sister, India Marie Black. He is also survived by his aunts, Brandy Black and Leslie Wooden, his uncles Melvin Kinzer and Lamar Wooden, along with his grandfather, Melvin Hoston.
Jonathon is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Azetta Black, his maternal grandparents, Les and Linda (Wooden) Armstrong.
Jonathon was born on August 17, 1990, he arrived with his eyes wide open, quietly observing everyone around him and full of curiosity, ready for what was to come next.
Early in life, Jonathon was a bit of an introvert. He enjoyed watching the world around him. He was also a very inquisitive child, investigating and seeking answers.
When his sister arrived a year later, he took his role as a big brother seriously. He now had someone who helped him and who he could help shape their development.
He protected her and taught her everything he knew; she was his very first student.
In elementary school, he learned to read and found that was the key to learning. It is also where he found his love for music. He learned to read music and play the violin.
He loved being outside, and playing baseball.
In middle school, he started to hone in his ear for music, and continued on the path of being an exemplary student.
In high school, he was mentioned in the Who's Who of American High School Students 2005/6 edition, for a variety of accomplishments.
He also worked as a lifeguard for City of Columbus Parks and Recs. His dedication to the children was evident where he not only taught swim lessons and watched over others but also instilled confidence and safety in countless children. His passion for music eventually carried him into the role of Walnut Ridge’s high school band field commander, a position he embraced with pride.
It was during this time that he truly began to break out of his shell.
From all of these accomplishments, he earned a full scholarship to the University of Toledo, where he received a bachelor's degree in music and general education, which set him on the path of becoming an educator in music.
Jonathon was more than just an accomplished athlete and musician; he was inherently a teacher at heart. He devoted his time to imparting knowledge and tutoring children who needed a guiding hand. His patience and understanding made a profound difference in the lives of many. He found his calling when he started teaching fourth grade. This dedication to nurturing young minds only deepened and was the reason and need to focus on special needs children. Currently, he is actively working towards completing his Master’s Degree in Special Education, a testament to his commitment to making a meaningful impact in the field of education. There were many nights, where he called home to discuss this student, or this project for school, bouncing ideas around with his mother and father. Those phone calls always ended with we are very proud of you. And remember, if you just reach one child, your job is done.
Jonathon was a beacon of enthusiasm and energy and he embraced every moment with a zest for life that inspired those around him. His spirit was one of warmth and compassion, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of teaching, mentoring, and caring for others will continue to resonate in the hearts of those he touched. We will remember Jonathon not only for his accomplishments but for the love and joy he brought into our lives. His light will shine on through the lives he enriched during his time with us.
His family will feel his absence deeply; a part of their hearts will always remain unfilled.
We love you, JB.
