Lana Jean Bocook, lovingly known as Mama Lana or MawMaw, passed away peacefully at her home in Grove City, Ohio, on Sunday, May 18, 2025, just three days after celebrating her 71st birthday. Born on May 15, 1954, in Marietta, Ohio, she was the beloved daughter of the late Shirley and Carl Ball, and granddaughter of Evelyn and Harry Turrill, who also preceded her in death.
Lana was a 1972 graduate of Central High School and lived a life of dedication, laughter, and love. She worked in a variety of roles throughout her life, including as a receptionist at Hair Plus Hair Designs in North Carolina, film developer at K-Mart in Pennsylvania, and at the Borders warehouse in Ohio. But perhaps her most enduring contributions were the ones she gave freely—with her time, her heart, and her signature sense of humor.
A woman of deep faith, Lana volunteered countless hours at her church, creating bulletins, singing in the choir, and supporting funeral ministries. She also served her local schools with joy, especially through her work with NJROTC at Grove City High School and Central Crossing High School—where her legendary spaghetti sauce earned a reputation all its own.
Lana’s heart was with her family. She proudly stood beside her high school sweetheart Donald Bocook through 51 years of marriage, supporting their home and raising their children during Don’s 25 years of Marine Corps service around the world. No matter where life took them, she made it home—with love, laughter, and little touches that made everything special.
She was a collector of treasures and moments: an avid fan of a good QVC deal, a loyal Bradford Exchange book shopper, and a lover of Fenton glass. Lana also had a deep love for Hawaii, Dole Whip, and sunny, happy memories. Her spirit could light up a room, her laugh was infectious, and her favorite sayings—like “OBKB” and “Love you more”—will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She never knew a stranger, welcoming everyone with the same warmth, humor, and open heart that defined her life.
She is survived by her devoted husband Donald Bocook; children Stori (Brandon) Hiles, Braun (Sheila) Bocook, and Kymber (Nick) Allen; grandchildren Brenden (Alexis) Bocook, Adriana Canterbury, Bayley Bocook, and Remington Bocook; and great-grandchildren Ellie Campbell and Emerson Bocook. She also leaves behind her beloved “granddogs”: Lola, Weller, Ghia, Brody, Winston, Piper, and Ash, as well as countless friends and extended family, each of whom carries a part of her light forward.
Lana bravely fought breast cancer for two years, facing every day with courage, grace, and unwavering love for her family.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Grove City Church of the Nazarene from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a celebration of life service at 12:00 p.m., followed by graveside services and a funeral dinner.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pelotonia, as her loved ones ride in her honor and continue the fight she faced so bravely.
