Mabel "Irene" Ault, 102, of Mount Gilead, OH passed away Saturday, January 18, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. Irene was born in Lincoln Township in Morrow County on November 29, 1911, to Marion and Garnie (Benson) Weaver and was the youngest of 4 children. Irene is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Noah Ault; sister, Myrtle Pearl; brothers, Lawrence Weaver and Floyd Weaver.
Survivors include her children, Rex (Nancy) Shaffer, Mary (George) Daniels, Sherry (James) Seckel, Barbara (Wade) Payne; grandchildren, Debbie Tudor, Ronnie (Cheryl) Shaffer, Randy Shaffer, Beth (John) Boehm, Brian (Kim) Retterer, Brent (Randi) Retterer, Vickie (Bob) Obenour Lindsay, Vince Daniels, Val Daniels, Jeffrey Seckel, Joel (Shella) Seckel, Jill (Dave) Bloedel, Jodee (Rob) Wagner; 25 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Irene was a member of the Fulton Methodist Church and transferred to Mt. Gilead Methodist church in 1942 where she was an active member. Some of her most memorable accomplishments included holding the first meeting of the Friendship Sunday School Class in her home with three couples present; United Methodist Women started around her dining room table and she chaired many smorgasbords to raise money to pay for the Education Building of the Church.
Other community activities included helping to organize Mt. Gilead Schools PTA and was President 1949-1950; past member of Burgoyne Chapter 173 of Eastern Stars and Rebecca Lodge of Fulton; member of silver twig of Morrow County Hospital for 25 years; chaired March of Dimes for Polio and was instrumental in getting the vaccine available to children of Morrow County; active in both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts; member of Saturday Luncheon Card Club and the Williamsport Wednesday Dinner Club.
Irene worked in the grocery business for over 40 years. She was in a partnership with her brother, Lawrence Weaver in the Corner Food Market in Mt. Gilead and later worked for Lawrence and his sons at the IGA Foodliner in Mt. Gilead. Additionally she worked for her son, Rex Shaffer at Shaffer's IGA in Prospect.
Irene was a wonderful seamstress, making clothes for her family thru out the years. She made clothes for school, proms, weddings and then dresses for her grandchildren.
Her home was always open to her children and their friends. Her bread and pies could not be beat.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 5-7 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church, 75 East High Street, Mt. Gilead, OH 43338 with the Funeral Service on Thursday, January 23, 2014, 11:00 AM at the church with visitation 1 hr prior.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church.
