Margaret Moss Johnston Vogt

Margaret Moss Johnston Vogt ("Mossie") passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at the age of 96, in Columbus, OH. She was born in Columbia, MO, the youngest child, and only daughter, of the late William Ambrose and Ann Baker Johnston, on February 17, 1922.

From a young age Mossie lived an adventurous life. After graduating high school at age 16, she attended Christian College (now Columbia College) in Columbia, MO. She transferred after graduation to the University of Missouri, where she became a proud sister of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. It was also at MU that she met and fell in love with George Peter Vogt, Jr. With the United States at war, Mossie took a train across the country in November 1942, to wed "Pete" on the day he was graduated from Officers' Candidate School at Fort Lee, VA, in Petersburg. Their marriage was the beginning of an odyssey, encompassing more than 40 moves, they would make during their 69 years of marriage. From Missouri to Guam to Germany to Maryland to Washington, D.C., to Illinois to San Francisco, CA, Mossie and Pete created a beautiful, full life with family and friends, near and far, on countless adventures across the globe. In their retirement together, they settled first in Overland Park and Olathe, KS, and finally in Columbus, OH, near their beloved grandchildren.

A proud United States military wife, Mossie also worked as Executive Secretary, at the age 27, to the United States High Commissioner in postwar Germany, John J. McCloy, appointed by President Truman to administer West Germany for the Allies. Subsequently, she held the same position with Richard Helms, former CIA Director and the last US Ambassador to Iran, and with the CEO of an oil company in San Francisco.

Accomplished as she was professionally, it was for her family that she reserved her love and devotion. Preceded in death by her cherished brothers, Thomas Bingham Johnston (Virginia) and Francis Ambrose Johnston (Ellen), Mossie spoke often and lovingly of their adventures growing up together, and the three remained close throughout their lives.

Mossie will be missed forever by her children, George Peter Vogt III (Randy Henderson) and Margaret Moss Vogt Schuster (Rick), who will carry her always in loving memory. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Sarah Howell Schuster Kuhnell (Michael), Joshua Bingham Schuster, Anne Bourquin Schuster Bingman (Austin), and Elisabeth Estes Schuster (Mikey DeLasalle), all of whom will remember their "Mimi" lovingly for her beauty, grace, generous love, and flawless elegance. Perhaps the happiest moments of Mossie's last years were spent laughing joyfully with her great-grandchildren, August and Meret Kuhnell, Hazel and Elisabeth Bingman, and Brodie DeLasalle.
