Marilyn McRae, a cherished retired elementary school teacher and beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2025, in Westerville, Ohio. Born on January 11, 1940, in Youngstown, Ohio, she touched the lives of many with her sweet demeanor, brilliance, and an undeniable talent that illuminated any room she graced.
Throughout her illustrious career as a dedicated educator in Northeast Columbus, Marilyn ignited a love for learning in her third-grade students at Avalon Elementary School. Renowned for her creativity and passion for art classes, she fostered an environment where each child could flourish and express their unique talents. Her love for education did not begin or end in the classroom; it was deeply rooted in her academic journey. Marilyn was a proud graduate of the prestigious Columbus School for Girls, a tradition in her family as a second-generation attendee. She continued her education at The Ohio State University, where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education, and further pursued higher education at Michigan State University and Mexico City College, demonstrating her relentless pursuit of knowledge.
Outside of her teaching career, Marilyn enthusiastically engaged in a variety of hobbies that reflected her creative spirit. She was a dedicated volunteer, actively involved in TWIG and lending her compassionate hand at the hospital, particularly with polio cases. Her passion extended to baking, sewing, quilting, and crocheting, where her creations often found loving homes. An avid photographer, she captured countless family moments, earning the affectionate title of "family photographer." Marilyn’s love for animals was evident in the many cherished pets who shared her home throughout the years, alongside her delightful collection of dolls.
Marilyn's proudest accomplishments, however, were her family and the unwavering love she shared with them. She leaves behind her loving husband of 65 years, David, who stood by her side through every endeavor. Her legacy continues with her sons, David II, Donald (Linda), and Thomas, who she raised as uniquely different. Grandchildren Robert, Josh, Amie, Chad (Leann), Caitlin (Matt), George, and Alexander, as well as great-grandchildren Hunter, Ashlynn, Banks, Anita, and Elle, will forever treasure the memories created with their beloved grandmother.
Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Marion (Culp), her son, James, and her brother, Donald Masson. Her departure leaves a void that cannot be filled, yet her spirit will forever linger in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
As we remember Marilyn McRae, we will carry forward her legacy of love, creativity, and genuine kindness. She embodied the qualities of a remarkable woman, lighting up the lives of everyone around her. She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered, a testament to a life lived with purpose and devotion.
A celebration of Marilyn's life will be held at a later date.
