Dr. Mary Catherine "Cathy" Ashmore, 81, of Columbus, passed away on March 1, 2014 at her residence.

She was born February 12, 1933 in Port Huron, Michigan to parents Bud and Sally Hill.

Cathy is preceded in death by her two sons Mark Thomas and David Wheeler Ashmore.

She is survived by her son Michael B. Ashmore; brother Richard Charles Hill and sister Elizabeth Ann Wilson and their families; grandson Matthew Wheeler Ashmore, son of deceased David; great-grandson Marcus Wheeler Ashmore, son of Matthew; Chris Ashmore and Rebecca Jordon, of Ashland, Kentucky, children of son Michael Ashmore; her two best friends, her Shih Tzu's Gizmo, age 17 and Rudy, age 7, who gave her unconditional love; and her best friend Karen McKown.
Cathy has dedicated her career to teaching young people to be independent as entrepreneurs. She believes that every school should give students of all ages the chance to learn to be creative in dreaming up a business that provides goods and services that others need and will buy. She taught entrepreneurship, marketing, and free enterprise at Blazer High School in Ashland, Kentucky, New Albany High School in New Albany, Ohio, and at Ohio State University. In addition, she took these skills internationally as a result of obtaining major grants. Her projects brought her to Poland 33 times, Hungary 15 times, and to Romania.

As a consultant at the Polish Solidarity Foundation in Gdasnk, Poland Cathy worked country-wide with the staff and Lech Walesa to teach former union members to be entrepreneurs after the fall of communism. She managed similar projects in Hungary and Romania.

A second major grant enabled Cathy to teach young marginalized youth in South Africa how to be effective entrepreneurs. She worked in the Black homelands at the time that Nelson Mandela was establishing the new South African Nation.
Her final experience was in Kygrstan where she taught people to be entrepreneurs using the Russian language to translated form.

Cathy was a great friend to her neighbors who lived at Hidden Lakes in Columbus and walked the dogs with them. She had a great love for music and nature and she will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
