Mary Ellen Hairston, a cherished soul whose warmth and kindness touched all who knew her, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026, at the age of 71 in Columbus, Ohio. Born on August 2, 1954, in Columbus to the late Clyde and Helen Miller, Mary Ellen lived a life rich with love, dedication, and a deep connection to those around her.
Mary Ellen was preceded in death not only by the loving presence of her parents but also by her devoted husband, David Hairston, and her beloved nephew, Daniel Miller. Their memories live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
She is lovingly survived by her son, David Hairston, who carried forward her legacy of compassion and strength. Her siblings—her sister Janet Miller, and brothers Steven (Vicky), Timothy, Kenneth (Mary Jo), and Jeffrey (Elizabeth) Miller—shared countless moments of joy and support with her throughout her life. Mary Ellen’s spirit extended warmly to her nieces and nephews Joshua, Rachel, David, Amelia, and Lucas, as well as to her great-niece Emma and great-nephew Grayson, who brought light and laughter to her days, and too many in-laws to mention.
For over three decades, Mary Ellen dedicated herself as a nurse at Twin Valley Behavioral Healthcare Hospital for over 30 years, offering healing and comfort to many. Her compassionate nature was as boundless as her love for her garden, where she found peace tending to her plants and watching the delicate dance of birds outside her window. Mary Ellen’s adventurous spirit found joy in camping, hiking, canoeing, and attending races, often accompanied by cherished friends and family. She was a steadfast and passionate Cleveland Browns fan, embodying loyalty in every facet of her life.
Mary Ellen’s affection extended to the many dogs she cared for throughout her life, each one a testament to her nurturing heart. Above all, her greatest joy was spending time with those she loved, weaving bonds that will forever hold her memory close.
Her absence leaves a profound void that will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her. The family will announce a Celebration of Life at a future date to honor and remember the extraordinary life she led.
Mary Ellen Hairston’s legacy of kindness, loyalty, and love will remain an enduring light in the hearts of her family and friends. She will be profoundly missed and forever cherished.
