Mary Jo Gaskalla, 91, of Lewis Center, was united with her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, July 21, 2025. Preceded in death by parents, John & Eunice Gaskalla; brothers Jack, Charles and Lanny. Survived by many nieces and nephews, their families, and a host of dear friends.
After graduating from Linden McKinley High School in 1952, Mary Jo earned a B.S. in Education from The Ohio State University. For 9 years, she taught high school band and choir in the Pickaway County School System (Teays Valley) where they continue to use the Alma Mater anthem she composed. During her summers, Mary Jo attended VanderCook College of Music (Chicago) where she received a Masters in Music. In 1965, she began 9 wonderful years of teaching at Grandview High School in Franklin County where a Scholarship in her name is awarded each year. She was a beloved teacher at both districts and remained in contact with many of the students through the years. Her bands were consistently rated Superior in state competitions, and three of the groups were invited to perform at state conventions.
In 1974, she felt the need for a new challenge and began a job with the State Auditor’s office (Ohio) as a state examiner where she served the next 18 years.
Through the years, she continued to share her love of music by directing the Worthington Civic Band, served as a judge for the Ohio Music Education Association, was the first female band leader for the 122nd Army Band, and directed the orchestra at the Polaris Grace Brethren Church.
She loved Jesus and was a long-time member of Grace Polaris. For over 30 years, she used her teaching skills as a Precept leader equipping women (and men) to inductively study the Bible.
A die-hard Buckeye fan, Mary Jo would proudly wear Scarlet & Gray to church the day after a football victory, and Black & Blue after a loss.
Friends, if they wish, may contribute to Grace Polaris Church (Westerville, OH), Precept (Chattanooga, TN), Worthington Christian Village, or Luminary Hospice.
