Mary M. Moss, 98, of Columbus, went to her heavenly reward on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Zusman Hospice. She was born March 29, 1918 in Wythe County, VA, the daughter of the late Bailey and Gertrude Brown Woods.
She attended McDowell County Public Schools while living in Keystone West Virginia. As a young woman, Mary Woods relocated to Columbus Ohio. Mary became employed by and retired from Ohio State University in the Housekeeping Department.
On September 4, 1970 Mary was united in marriage to her best friend, Elwood Moss. The couple would have celebrated their 46th Anniversary on the day after her passing.
Mother Moss became acquainted with Overseer Bertha Plummer C. W. Gilbert as her beautician. She related on many occasions that she received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and with fire. In September, 1966, she was one of the first members of a prayer band that started at Overseer's home at 1692 Bryden Road. When Overseer bought the first building at 197 Wilson Avenue, Mary Moss became one of the charter members. The church was founded in April, 1967 as Refuge Church of Christ. Later the name was changed to The Divine Refuge Church of Christ and the church is now known as Divine Kingdom Builders. Mother served under three pastors, the late Overseer Wright-Gilbert, the late Bishop George C. Plummer, II and her current Pastor Terri Jamison Gary. She was a member of the Missionary Board, on theTrustee Board and when she reached full age, she was appointed Mother of the church. Mother Moss served faithfully until her health prevented her from attending regularly.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her daughter, Ophelia G. Peacock and nine siblings. She is survived by her loving husband, Deacon Elwood Moss; son, Joseph (Hattie) Woods Jr; grandchildren, John Webb, James (Debi) Thornwell, Donna Thornwell, Tonya Nooks, Nathaniel Thornwell, Kim (Butch) Caine, Fontessa Woods, Vanessa Thomas, Trina Brown, Byron (Taneshia) Woods, Christopher Woods, and Joseph M Woods, Maelin Woods, Robin (Sylan) Wilson, Rochelle (Gary) Butler; step children, Elwood (Vicky) Moss, Nancy (Harold) Beavers, Shelva Hall, Bonnie (David), Kathy Smith, Debbie Mapp, Ronnie Moss; special nephews, Robert Neal, George Woods; a host of great-grand children, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews; family and friends who loved her dearly.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 10, 2016 from 9:00-10:00 AM at Greater Ebenezer Cathedral of Praise, 2645 Fairwood Ave. Columbus, Ohio 43207 with the Homegoing service at 10:00 AM. Interment will be at Glen Rest Memorial Estates. Pastor Terri Jamison Gary, Officiant.
