Matthew H. Hooks, born on February 9, 1960, in New Bern, North Carolina, passed away on June 12, 2026, in Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 66. He was a beloved husband, brother, and friend who touched the lives of many with his friendly and outgoing personality.

Matthew grew up in New Bern and attended New Bern High School. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1977 to 1983 as an Underwater Mine Maintenance Specialist. After his military service, he built a career with great dedication. For over 18 years, Matthew worked as an independent courier for Same Day Critical, supporting Nationwide Children's Hospital. Alongside this, he pursued various interests, including insurance, real estate, and became a certified hypnotherapist. He also enjoyed lending his voice as a voice-over actor.

Matthew was known to everyone as a likable and hardworking man who could strike up a conversation with anyone. Many friends, family members, and coworkers admired his friendly nature. He enjoyed a range of hobbies such as smoking cigars as part of the Craven Street Society, collecting and selling guns at local gun shows, and had a passion for acting and movies. His absolute favorite Christmas movie was Die Hard. He also liked action movies, playing Xbox, and cherished going out to eat with his wife Karen. He and Karen are members of The Church of the Guiding Light, where he served as a healing minister.

One special memory shared by his wife Karen that stands out is the day they met at Scioto Trails State Park. Matthew literally “fell” for her on their very first hike, and they remained together ever since. Their 34 years of marriage was filled with love and companionship.

Matthew leaves behind his loving wife Karen. He is also survived by his sisters Sharon Hooks, Michaele Hooks, and Jan Gresham, along with his brother-in-law Ron Cook and his wife Rhonda. Matthew’s family extends further to include many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and even one great-great niece. He was preceded in death by his parents Jacob and Edith (Hubbard) Hooks and his parents-in-law Wayne and Dorothy Cook.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on July 11, 2026, which is Matthew and Karen's 34th wedding anniversary, at 11:00 AM at Andersonville Community Church (UMC), located at 1249 Andersonville Road, Chillicothe, Ohio 45601.

Matthew’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His kindness, joy, and hardworking spirit will never be forgotten.
