Melissa Organiscak

May 10, 1955 — April 3, 2025

Dublin

Melissa Organiscak believed in the quiet power of kindness, the importance of hard work, and the joy of a well-told story. After a short battle with cancer, she passed away peacefully on April 3rd, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family and the legacy of a life spent lifting others.

Born on May 10, 1955, to Eleanor and Michael Kondik in Toronto, Ohio, Melissa carried her gentle spirit through every chapter of her life, from her school days at Catholic Central in Steubenville to earning her Bachelor’s degree in Library Science from Ohio Dominican and later a Master’s in Reading Education from the University of Dayton.

For 35 years, Melissa served as a teacher and librarian in Dublin City Schools in Dublin, OH and Lakewood City Schools in Hebron, OH. She didn’t just teach literacy, she cultivated a love of learning. As the first librarian at Eli Pinney Elementary, she hand-selected every single book that lined its shelves. She was proud to be the quiet, guiding presence who introduced students to their first favorite books, often reading Poppy by Avi or And Tango Makes Three aloud with care and purpose. She was awarded the Golden Shamrock for teaching excellence in 1998.

Melissa was the kind of person who never needed to raise her voice. Her calm, soft-spoken presence commanded respect and comforted everyone around her. She never complained, even in hard times, and was a steadfast partner, mother, sister, daughter and friend. She cared for her husband through illness with unwavering loyalty, visiting him daily even when it was emotionally difficult for her. Her strength wasn’t loud, but it was lived, every single day.

Outside the classroom, Melissa loved decorating her home, gardening in the yard she nurtured in Dublin, and watching the Cavaliers. She walked on her treadmill, listened to Ed Sheeran, and shared her son’s and daughter-in-law’s adventures with pride. She treasured visits to North Carolina to see her sister Eleanor, and outings with friends to Local Roots, the Rusty Bucket, or Starbucks for an occasional caramel Frappuccino.

She taught many lessons over the years: that work ethic matters; that spiritual grounding helps guide you; that a good partner is one of life’s greatest treasures. But her actions spoke just as clearly. She taught loyalty by living it. She taught love by giving it without conditions. And in the aftermath of her passing, she brought people closer together, reminding us of the importance of shared stories, hugs, and meals with the ones you love.

Melissa is survived by her husband Joe, her son Matt and daughter-in-law Erika, her sister Eleanor, brother-in-law Dan Bails, and a close circle of family and friends. And of course, her beloved grandcat, Luna.

A memorial service will be held on April 15th, 2025. The gathering begins at 10 a.m., followed by a mass at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that you honor Melissa by gifting a book to a child, school, or literacy program of your choice.

Should you choose, here is a link to donate to the Columbus Library in her honor.
