Michael Charles Burns, fondly known as Mike, passed away on January 8, 2026, following a brief but brave battle with metastatic cancer. He was born on May 6, 1943, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, to Charles Emerson Burns and Josephine (Roberts) Burns and was the eldest of their children.
Mike attended Huntsville Local School, where he completed all twelve years of his education, graduating in 1961. His passion for education led him to The Ohio State University (O.S.U.), where he earned a PhD in Science. He began his professional journey as a microbiologist with the Ohio State Health Department, dedicating 20 years to public service. Following this, he worked for Ross Laboratories before venturing into entrepreneurship. Together with his associate Bill, he established Bench Mark Lab, a business that flourished under their guidance.
On May 1, 1965, Mike married his beloved wife, Bonnie Catherine McCord, known affectionately as Cathy. Their union lasted 56 cherished years until Cathy preceded him in death on May 26, 2021. Together they welcomed one wonderful son, Jason, who is married to Stephanie. Mike was also a proud grandfather to two grandsons, Alex (partner Izzy) and Cameron (partner Hannah), who brought immense joy to his life.
Mike is survived by two sisters, Victoria (Fred) Thomas of Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Jody (Larry) Godwin of DeGraff, Ohio. He is also remembered by his brother Christopher Burns, who is preceded in death by his wife Cathy, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will carry on his legacy.
In his spare time, Mike developed a range of hobbies that reflected his inquisitive nature and love for history. He was deeply engaged with ancestry research, diligently tracing his family tree and exploring many cemeteries in this pursuit. He held a fondness for old cars and was passionate about stamp and baseball collections, showcasing his appreciation for both history and craftsmanship.
Mike's life touched many, and he will be well-remembered for his dedication and hard work. He leaves behind a family that will carry his memories forward. His private internment will take place at a later date at the convenience of the family.
